Agustín De La Cuesta Fires Racing Back to the Top of the Annual Table in Clausura Win

It took until the second half, but when it arrived, it was worth its weight in gold: a shot from Agustín De La Cuesta that rattled off the post provided the only goal of the afternoon and handed Racing back something it had been missing for a while, the top spot in the Annual Table.

The match, which closed out matchday four of the Torneo Clausura, was played at Parque Roberto in Sayago and ended 1-0 in favor of the Escuelita. It was no ordinary win either: it came on the very weekend that Peñarol fell to Nacional and Deportivo Maldonado lost to Juventud, so Racing capitalized on its rivals' stumbles to move into sole possession of first place on the aggregate table.

Chambián's side came out with a clear plan to control possession from the start and wasted little time creating danger. In the 24th minute came the first real chance: a powerful strike from De La Cuesta from the edge of the box forced a superb save from Jaume. Albion's goalkeeper was, right from the outset, the standout figure of the first half.

Ten minutes later, in the 35th, it was Juan Bosca's turn, testing Jaume with a low, angled shot that drifted just wide of the base of the post. It felt like Racing's goal was coming, and that sense was confirmed right at the end of the half: in the 47th minute, Facundo González went looking for the corner with a hard shot that Jaume once again turned away, though this time the ball rebounded loose. Gadea got on the end of it with a header, but the ball sailed over the crossbar. That was the last action before the break, with Racing in control but unable to turn its dominance into a goal.

The reward came in the second half

In the second half, the home side's persistence finally paid off. De la Cuesta, who had already given a warning with his first-half effort, made no mistake this time: a powerful shot from inside the box struck the post and went in for the 1-0 that would prove decisive.

With the lead in hand, Racing managed the final minutes as best it could while Albion threw everything forward in search of an equalizer. The visitors pushed desperately in the closing stages but could not find a way through, and the Cervecero held on for a hard-earned and valuable win.

The result does more than add three points in the Clausura: it puts Racing back on top of the Annual Table, a spot the club had lost and now reclaims through its own effort and the missteps of its closest challengers.
