Alberto Gamero Reaches Nine Straight Unbeaten Clásicos at Atanasio Girardot with Millonarios

Ahead of Matchday 12 of the Liga BetPlay, the coach arrives in Medellín with a record of four wins and five draws on the road against Atlético Nacional.

Alberto Gamero Reaches Nine Straight Unbeaten Clásicos at Atanasio Girardot with Millonarios

Some numbers start to carry weight all on their own, and this is one of those cases. Alberto Gamero has never lost at the Atanasio Girardot while in charge of Millonarios, and that stat is back in the spotlight as the Albiazul squad visits Atlético Nacional for Matchday 12 of the 2026-II Liga BetPlay.

The number carries real weight given what that stadium represents. The clásico between Colombian soccer's two most successful clubs is never just about the ball, there's history, pressure and an atmosphere that few coaches handle with the same ease as Gamero. And that's exactly what the record shows: he has coached in nine clásicos as a visitor in Medellín and has never walked away with a loss. The tally reads four wins and five draws, an unbeaten streak that spans different tournaments, formats and even a final.

A look back at how the unbeaten run was built, match by match

It all started in 2021-II, when Millonarios won 3-1 in a match that began as an uphill battle. Nacional went ahead with a goal from Dorlan Pabón, but Gamero's side answered through Daniel Giraldo and then Jader Valencia stepped up with a brace that tipped the scales for good. In 2022-I, during the quadrangular stage, the match was a rollercoaster: an own goal by Yerson Candelo made it 1-0 for Millonarios, Jarlan Barrera equalized, Daniel Ruiz put the Albiazul back in front, and Yeison Guzmán closed out the scoring for a 2-2 finish. In 2022-II, on Matchday 3, Millonarios won again, this time 2-1, with goals from Daniel Ruiz and Luis Carlos Ruiz, while Brahian Palacios pulled one back for the green side.

2023-I produced two scoreless chapters: a 0-0 on Matchday 8 in March and another 0-0 in June, this one in the first leg of the league final, a title Millonarios would go on to lift in the second leg. Months later, in 2023-II, came another narrow win courtesy of Daniel Cataño's goal during the quadrangular phase.

The 2023 Copa Colombia final delivered another emotional swing: a 1-1 draw with an early goal from Leonardo Castro answered by Aguirre, though on that night the penalty shootout went in Nacional's favor. Then in 2024-I, Gamero smiled again at the Atanasio with a 1-0 win, once more thanks to Leonardo Castro. And the most recent recorded visit, in 2024-II, ended 1-1, with a goal from Álvaro Angulo for the home side and Falcao García equalizing from the penalty spot.

With that history behind him, the upcoming visit to the Atanasio Girardot once again puts to the test something no one has managed to take away from Gamero in that stadium: the habit of not losing.
