Alex Rangel Has 48 Hours to Pay Off a $33,000 Debt or Face a Six-Month Ban

A contract torn up back in 2024 could come back to haunt Alex Rangel at the exact moment things looked settled for him at Barcelona. The FEF's Chamber of Mediation and Dispute Resolution has set the clock: 48 hours to pay up, or he risks being sidelined for as long as six months.

The root of the issue traces back to Ambato. Tecnico Universitario filed a claim against the defender for $33,000 after he walked away from his professional contract with the club without cause back in 2024. The ruling took its time, but it eventually came down: two years later, the verdict favored the "red roller."

What stands out is that Barcelona actually stepped in to try to sort things out, even though the club itself wasn't named in the proceedings. The plan was to pay off the debt in installments, a solution that often works in cases like this. Tecnico Universitario, though, wouldn't go for it and demanded full, direct payment, no middlemen and no extended timeline.

An ultimatum with no room for interpretation

The Chamber's ruling left no doubt about which way things were leaning:

Given that the plaintiff has complied by providing the defendant with its bank account information, and the latter has not informed this Chamber of compliance with the ruling, it is hereby ordered that, within a term of 48 hours, Mr. Alex Daniel Rangel Corozo shall comply with the resolution issued by this CMRD-FEF; failure to do so, without any further request being necessary from the plaintiff, will result in the corresponding sanction being applied under article 45 of the CMRD-FEF regulations.FEF Chamber of Mediation and Dispute Resolution

In plain terms: if Rangel doesn't get the money transferred before Wednesday morning, the sanction kicks in automatically, with no need for Tecnico Universitario to file anything further. Article 45 of the CMRD-FEF regulations is exactly what allows for a ban of up to six months for anyone who fails to comply with rulings of this kind.

For Barcelona, the timing couldn't be worse. The center back recently signed a new deal with the club that runs through 2028, and losing him for six months over a financial matter that has nothing to do with what happens on the field would be a serious blow to the team's plans. That's why the club, even without any legal obligation to do so, is trying to back its player and keep the clock from running out before the debt gets settled.

The ball, quite literally, is now in the court of those 48 hours. And there's no asking for extra time.
