Alfredo Arias Storms Out of Press Conference After Clash Over His Future at Junior

The coach defended his two titles in one year and pushed back at a reporter before standing up and walking out.

The final whistle was just moments away at the Metropolitano when Junior had to settle for a 1-1 draw against Independiente Santa Fe in matchday seven of the Liga BetPlay. The result alone was enough to leave the shark faithful with long faces. But what happened afterward, in the press room, ended up being the real story of the night.

Alfredo Arias sat down in front of the microphones alongside Fabian Angel for the usual postgame breakdown. Everything seemed routine until a reporter asked him about the case for his continuity on the bench. That's when the Uruguayan's expression shifted and things turned into a verbal confrontation.

The response came quickly, and it wasn't mild. Arias pointed out that in just one year in charge of Junior he had already won two titles, drawing a sharp contrast with the club's recent history before he arrived.

I have a contract and I work, I'm grateful they brought me here and I've done serious work, I'm honest and I carry myself with dignity. Even if you don't want to look at the previous results, we won two titles and I was there. Even if you want to bury it, when I arrived there had been 10 titles in 101 years, one every ten years, and in one year I win two.Alfredo Arias

The coach didn't stop there. He went further and turned the question back on the reporter himself, questioning the consistency of demanding results from him when, in his view, past assessments had been made that don't hold up today.

If you don't like that argument, here's another one, I have a contract, I work, with five or six families working alongside me. My job isn't to hire or fire myself, it's to coach a team and try to make it win. Last semester and the one before, we were in trouble, I came here and I faced you directly. You're still here, if it were up to what you said back then, you shouldn't still be here, what argument do you have, after what you said, to demand things of me now. You do honorable work, you don't have to resign either.Alfredo Arias

With that, Arias stood up and left the room, leaving Fabian Angel alone to field the rest of the questions. An abrupt exit that captures pretty well the mood surrounding the team these days.

A Season That Won't Take Off

And the truth is, there's substance behind the tension. After winning back to back titles in the first half of the year, Junior's form has dropped considerably. The team has yet to record a win in the Finalizacion, and on top of that came elimination from the Copa BetPlay at the hands of Barranquilla FC, a blow that stung especially given the opponent and the stage of the competition.

Against that backdrop, it's no surprise that questions about Arias's future have started circulating more insistently among the press. The draw against Santa Fe, far from calming things down, ended up fueling even further a debate that had already been simmering for weeks in Barranquilla.
