Alianza Lima looks to end nearly three-year winless streak against Universitario at Matute

Nearly three years. That's how long Alianza Lima has gone without a win over Universitario, and it's starting to weigh heavier and heavier at Matute. On Saturday, September 12, at 8:00 p.m., Estadio Alejandro Villanueva hosts another edition of the Peruvian clasico, corresponding to matchday 9 of the Clausura 2026, with the broadcast handled by L1 Max.

There's more than pride on the line here. Both teams need to keep pace with Deportivo Garcilaso, who currently sit atop the standings, so the result carries real weight in the table too. But let's be honest, in a clasico the points almost always take a back seat to history and streaks.

And the streak, in this case, isn't in Alianza's favor. The last time the blanquiazules beat Universitario was on February 19, 2023, a 2-1 win at Estadio Monumental with goals from Pablo Sabbag and Gabriel Costa (Luis Urruti had pulled one back for the cremas). That team was managed by Guillermo "Chicho" Salas, who would go on to win the Apertura that year. Saturday's match will be the 81st clasico played at Matute, and Alianza still holds the edge there: 30 wins to 22 for Universitario, with 28 draws in between. It all began on March 2, 1975, when the blanquiazules routed their rivals 3-1 with goals from Vicente Sanchez, Andres Zegarra and Carlos Gomez.

In the overall record of official clasicos, the advantage also belongs to Alianza, though by increasingly tight margins: 112 wins for Alianza versus 109 for Universitario, with 81 draws. What stands out is that the 'U' has managed something it rarely achieved before: clinching a national title inside Matute, which it did in 1999 and again in 2023, that very match marking the turning point in the recent trend.

Ahead of the match, Pablo Guede is weighing whether Paolo Guerrero is fit enough to start.
