Alianza Lima looks to end eight-year winless run against Universitario at Matute

Eight years. That's how long Alianza Lima has gone without celebrating a win over Universitario on its own turf. This Saturday, September 12, Estadio Alejandro Villanueva dresses up for clasico day once again, and recent history weighs heavily on the home side: the last time Matute saw the blanquiazules win this matchup was back in 2018. Since then, draws and cream-colored victories have piled up on that unpaid tab.

The Peruvian clasico has dozens of chapters, but few stadiums have played as central a role as Matute. It was there, in 1975, that the two sides met for the first time at that venue, with Alianza winning 3-1 thanks to goals from Vicente Sanchez, Andres Zegarra and Gomez Laynez, against a Universitario side that arrived as reigning champion. Four years later, in 1979, the 'U' answered with its first win at Matute: a 3-6 result in the Copa Libertadores that included an own goal, an injury to Alianza's goalkeeper, and an offensive showcase capped by a brace from Cesar Adriazola.

One chapter stands apart from all the rest: 1985, when Alianza and Universitario played to a 0-0 draw through 90 minutes in the Torneo Regional semifinals and everything came down to penalties. It remains the only time a clasico has been decided from the spot, and that's where Ramon Quiroga became a double hero, converting his own attempt and then saving the final penalty from Luis "Potrillo" Escobar to seal an 8-7 shootout win for the 'U'.

Routs, finals and postcards etched in memory

The clasico's folklore has its rougher edges too, along with its share of blowouts. In 1994, Alianza snapped a five-year winless streak against the 'U' at Matute with a goal from Jose Soto, though the match is remembered above all for the punch Jose Amado Nunes landed on Juan Carlos Kopriva following a tension-filled sending off. A year later, in 1995, came one of the most memorable routs of all: a 6-3 win for Alianza, sparked by a Waldir Saenz brace in a comeback that started with the home side down on the scoreboard. Some finals were also settled there. In 1999, Universitario weathered a 1-0 loss to Alianza (not enough after a 3-0 first leg) to clinch back-to-back titles, with Oscar Ibanez climbing the goalpost in a moment that became iconic. Five years later, in 2004, Alianza flipped the script: with Waldir Saenz once again the star and a penalty save from Leao Butron, it claimed the Apertura title over its fiercest rival.

In 2009 it was Universitario that spoiled the home crowd's party, with a goal from Piero Alva and several key saves from Raul Fernandez, on its way to a title it would later confirm at the Monumental. Alianza's losing streak at Matute stretched all the way to 2015, when a squad depleted by suspensions and injuries, led on an interim basis by Gustavo Roverano, won thanks to a stunning goal from Colombian forward Carlos Preciado. Three years later came the last home win for the home side: that 2-1 comeback in 2018, powered by Gonzalo Godoy and Mauricio Affonso.

Since then, the 'U' hasn't lost at Matute: it won 2-0 in 2022 (a match remembered for Alexander Succar's ejection after his goal celebration) and repeated the same scoreline in 2023, clinching the title amid a stadium blackout that left the visiting fans without a visible celebration. The most recent clasico, in 2025, ended 1-1 after a last-gasp goal from Jose Rivera snatched away what looked like a win for Alianza, following a goal from Kevin Quevedo.

With that recent history in mind, Alianza gets another shot at Matute to end a wait that's starting to feel endless. Universitario, meanwhile, arrives with the confidence of a streak that nobody has managed to break in eight years.
