Alianza Lima hosts Universitario at Matute winless in three and without a win over its rival since 2018

Matute puts on its finest clothes this Saturday, September 12, to host Peruvian soccer's most anticipated rivalry match. Alianza Lima and Universitario de Deportes face off starting at 8:00 PM in matchday 9 of the 2026 Clausura, broadcast live on L1 Max, and both sides arrive with urgency written all over their faces.

Why so much anxiety for a midseason game? Because neither team can afford to give away points. Alianza Lima sits in eighth place with 13 points, six behind the leader, and is dragging along an uncomfortable streak: three games without a win and, more specifically, no victory over Universitario at Matute since 2018. That stat weighs heavier every time this rivalry match rolls around, and this year will be no exception.

On the other side, the 'U' arrive as runner-up with 17 points, just two behind leader Deportivo Garcilaso, who tops the table with 19. A stumble at Matute would push them further from first place right as the tournament starts to tighten up, so for Universitario, winning isn't just about pride, it's a pure standings necessity.

The names who could decide it

For Alianza, everything runs through the feet of Eryc Castillo, who has already racked up seven goals in the Clausura and has become the team's lifeline in more than one tough match. Pablo Guede, however, knows that a clasico isn't won on offensive flair alone: that's where the experience and know-how of Renzo Garces, Nicolas Diaz, Esteban Pavez and Fernando Gaibor come in, pieces that will need to hold the line when the match turns rough.
