America looks to snap losing skid against Aguilas to keep hold of first place

The league leader isn't rolling in with the same confidence it had a couple of weeks ago. America has stumbled in back-to-back matches and now needs to bounce back against a team sitting in the lower half of the table. On Wednesday, September 23, at 7:30 PM, Pascual Guerrero Stadium hosts the clash between America and Aguilas for matchday 12 of the Liga BetPlay, airing live on WIN.

Has the winning streak that had the Scarlets running the show in the standings come to an end? It's still too early to say, but the recent numbers are a bit worrying. America fell 1-0 on the road to bottom-dweller Deportivo Pasto and then drew 1-1 in Ibague against Tolima. Even so, the team remains atop the league with 21 points, and tonight it has a chance to snap that rough patch against the side sitting 11th in the table.

Head coach David Gonzalez didn't hide his frustration over the red cards that have cost the team dearly in recent matches. The most recent case was forward Jhon Murillo's ejection against the maroon and gold side, an absence that ended up weighing heavily on the result.

Gonzalez was also clear about where the team stands right now and asked that things not be overblown internally, though he admitted the dip in form is real.

Names to watch

Up front, all eyes remain on Yeison Guzman, who already has seven goals in the tournament and leads the Liga BetPlay scoring chart. It was actually Guzman who scored in the last meeting between these two clubs.

On the Aguilas side, the player in the best form is Andres Ricaurte, who was the standout for the Antioquia club in the 2-2 draw against Deportivo Pereira in Medellin, a match in which he also added an assist.

The visiting side isn't going through a good stretch: Aguilas has gone five matchdays without a win and has slipped to 11th place with 11 points. On the road, its record is unremarkable, with one win, one draw and one loss this season. The last time these two teams met, America won 1-0 on March 20, 2026, with the goal coming from Guzman.

With that recent history in its favor and the need to put a stop to its string of poor results, America takes the field tonight at Pascual Guerrero to show that first place still belongs to them.
