América Makes Formal Offer for Bahía's Ramos Mingo to Replace Cáceres

América Makes Formal Offer for Bahía's Ramos Mingo to Replace Cáceres

The clock is ticking at Coapa and América no longer has room to spare. With just two days left in the Liga MX transfer window, the Azulcrema front office has put a formal offer on the table for Club Bahía over Argentine defender Santiago Ramos Mingo, the man chosen to fill the void left by Sebastián Cáceres.

The search didn't start here. The original plan targeted a domestic name: Alejandro Gómez, of Tijuana, was the center back Guillermo Almada wanted to bolster the backline. But Xolos priced the player at a figure that Coapa considered excessive, and every attempt to negotiate a more reasonable number ran into the same wall. That option is now effectively off the table.

With the Mexican signing falling through and the transfer window closing in, América had to look abroad. That's where Ramos Mingo's profile came into view, a 24 year old defender who checks the boxes Almada wants for that position: mileage, physicality and experience in a top flight league. Sources close to Coapa say contact with Bahía began almost immediately once alarm bells went off over the collapse of the other deal.

The player has plenty of history despite his youth. Developed in Boca Juniors' academy, he found his footing and became a regular starter at Defensa y Justicia, the club where he established himself in Argentine soccer before making the jump to Brazil in January 2025 to sign with Bahía. There he signed a contract that ties him to the Brazilian club through December 2029, which gives an idea that any negotiation won't be simple or cheap for the Eagles.

Why América doesn't want to solve this with homegrown players

At Coapa there's a clear stance: they don't want to head into the new half of the season leaving the entire responsibility of the center back position in the hands of the Mexican defenders currently on the roster, such as Israel Reyes, Ramón Juárez and Miguel Vázquez. The front office understands that Cáceres' departure leaves a gap in leadership and experience that needs to be filled by a seasoned player, not a bet on the future. That's why they've insisted on going to the South American market once the domestic option got complicated. The idea is to avoid being at a disadvantage heading into a demanding stretch, with the understanding that the three Mexican center backs, while competitive, still don't have the mileage that someone like Ramos Mingo has already logged in more demanding leagues like Argentina's and Brazil's.

If the negotiation with Bahía doesn't pan out, América already has other options identified so as not to be left without reinforcement at the position. What does seem certain, according to information gathered, is that before the window closes on Friday, the Eagles will add one more central defender to their roster.
