América hosts Pasto in Cali looking to extend its lead in Liga BetPlay

The unbeaten leader with 20 points takes on the bottom-placed team at Pascual Guerrero stadium on Monday, September 14 at 8:00 p.m.

The math is simple: if América wins on Monday, it pulls even further away from a chasing pack that's already watching from a distance. The Liga BetPlay leader hosts Deportivo Pasto, the league's bottom club, at Pascual Guerrero stadium, and the contrast between the two teams' current realities is hard to hide.

The match, part of matchday 10, is set for Monday, September 14 at 8:00 p.m., broadcast on WIN Sports. On paper, this is one of those games that writes itself: the team with the most wins against the only one still searching for its first.

América sits on 20 points and remains unbeaten. No one in the league has more victories: the club has banked six wins, and it also boasts the tournament's most productive attack with 20 goals scored. Those are the numbers of a comfortable leader, sure, but also of a team that doesn't ease up even when a game looks settled.

That much was clear midweek in the Copa Colombia, where the red squad flipped a match that had gotten complicated against Deportivo Pereira and advanced to the quarterfinals with a resounding 4-1. Coach David González explained afterward how the team handled that moment of uncertainty when the opponent took the lead:

We felt we had the upper hand, and when they scored on a transition, it's worth highlighting that the team stayed calm, understood what it had to do, and we ended up turning it around emphatically, always respecting the opponent.David González

A Pasto side that needs to react now

On the other side, the picture is the opposite. Deportivo Pasto still hasn't won this season and sits last with just two points. The defense isn't helping either: along with Alianza and Cúcuta, Pasto shares the league's most porous back line, having conceded 15 goals, a stat that weighs even heavier three hundred miles south of Cali.

On the road, the problem gets worse. In their four away matches this season, the Nariño side has drawn twice and conceded eight goals, a number that points to a tough night ahead against the league's top-scoring attack.

Rounding out the home team's offensive picture, Tomás Ángel arrives full of confidence after scoring twice in the Copa comeback, while Patrick Preciado was the one who salvaged a point in last matchday's 2-2 draw against Cúcuta with another brace. Two names to watch closely this Monday.

América comes off a clear home win: 3-0 over Alianza in matchday nine, a result that confirms its strength at Pascual Guerrero, where it has won all four matches played, scoring 15 goals and conceding just two.

The recent head-to-head history, though, doesn't favor the home side: the last meeting between the two ended 2-0 for Pasto, with goals from Andrey Estupiñán and Santiago Córdoba. A reminder that in soccer, the standings don't always guarantee anything, even when the gap in current form looks this wide.
