América must beat Toluca to close out home stretch on a high note
Las Águilas, league leaders but shaky in recent outings, host Toluca on Saturday as Federico Viñas returns to Estadio Banorte.

Third straight home game and a must-win situation: that is how América arrives at its matchup with Toluca for Matchday 15 of the Apertura 2026. The tournament leader is not at its best right now, even if the overall standings suggest otherwise.
Las Águilas remain on top of the table, but the last two matchdays left a strange feeling: they have struggled to close out games, and the defense, that unit that should be a sure thing, has shown cracks. For Almada's side, this is no ordinary match. If they want to reach the Liguilla as favorites, they need to string together wins right now, and the schedule shows no mercy: this is also the last match they will play at home in the regular phase, so the backing of Estadio Banorte carries double the weight.
They will not be facing an easy opponent. Toluca is not at its best either, but the recent history between these two clubs in knockout stages adds a special flavor to the clash. These are two teams that know each other well, that have clashed in decisive moments, and that always changes how you read a match that, on paper, might look routine.
The doubts and the returns
On Almada's list of concerns is Alex Zendejas, who looks like the biggest doubt for this game. On the other side, Mohamed will be able to count on a key piece for his attack: Federico Viñas, who returns to Estadio Banorte with a particular story, since he wore the América jersey before joining Toluca.
For the home side, América is expected to line up with Luis Malagón in goal, Kevin Álvarez and Santiago Ramos on the flanks, Santiago Bueno and Israel Reyes at center back, Franco Rossano, Erick Sánchez, Carlos Álvarez and Isaías Violante spread across midfield, and Brian Rodríguez alongside Henry Martín up top.
Toluca, for its part, would take the field with Hugo González in goal, Jesús Gallardo and Federico Pereira at fullback, Bruno Méndez at center back, and a midfield of Santiago Simón, Eric Gutiérrez, Franco Romero and Pavel Pérez. Up front, Jorge Díaz and Helinho would have the job of supporting Viñas in the search for goals.
The match is set for Saturday, October 31 at Estadio Banorte, kicking off at 7:00 pm Mexico City time (8:00 pm in Ecuador, Colombia and Peru; 9:00 pm Eastern time; 10:00 pm in Argentina, Uruguay and Chile). With the league lead on the line and the last chance to collect points at home, América knows there is no room for more self-inflicted struggles on its own turf.
