América and Toluca Are the Only Liga MX Clubs With Home Field Perks in the Leagues Cup 2026 Quarterfinals

Playing at home in a knockout round is worth its weight in gold. In the 2026 Leagues Cup, a handful of Mexican clubs have that advantage within reach, though not all of them have it equally easy. América and Toluca are the only two Liga MX clubs to reach the quarterfinals among the five that received special hosting conditions, and each one has it under different rules.

Let's take it in order. The tournament regulations granted "hosting privileges" in the final stage to five Liga MX clubs: Toluca, Tigres, América, Monterrey and Pachuca. Of that group, only the Eagles and the Red Devils advanced to the quarterfinals, making them the only two who can currently cash in on that benefit, provided the chosen stadium is among those designated by the Organizing Committee. Estadio Banorte, América's home ground, is one of those authorized venues.

That said, América's privilege isn't automatic. For the quarterfinal match to be played at Banorte, the Eagles need to face an MLS club that meets two conditions: it can't be Inter Miami, and it can't have collected more points than América in the standings from the Leagues Cup's initial phase. That's where América's position in that table comes into play. Right now the club sits in third place among Liga MX teams, with a shot at climbing to first if they pick up one more win.

In fact, the result against Austin FC is crucial: if América wins, the path clears for the quarterfinal to be played at Banorte. A draw or a loss would complicate things, though the final say on the venue always rests with the Organizing Committee.

What would happen in the semifinals?

If América advances, the picture changes. The Eagles lose the hosting privilege they held in the quarterfinals and retain only one path to a home game: if their semifinal opponent is another Liga MX team, in which case the committee could once again designate Banorte. If the matchup is against an MLS club, the venue would belong to the American rival. And if América were to reach the final, there's currently no provision for it to be held at Banorte.

Toluca's situation is different, and in some ways more comfortable. The Red Devils hold hosting privileges through the semifinals because they are the reigning Liga MX champions from the Apertura 2025. That allows them to play at Estadio Nemesio Díez in the quarterfinals and, if they advance, in the semifinals as well, with a single exception: if their opponent along the way turns out to be Inter Miami. Neither the final nor the third place match is covered by this benefit, so at those stages the venue decision will also fall to the Organizing Committee.

Which raises the obvious question: why doesn't Cruz Azul, the reigning Liga MX champion, have any hosting privilege in this edition? The answer has to do with the regulation's timeline. For the 2026 Leagues Cup, only the Clausura 2025 and Apertura 2025 tournaments were taken into account, and Cruz Azul won its title in the Clausura 2026, outside that window. Because of that, the benefit won't reach them until next year's edition.
