Sbaï hits the woodwork and the frame three times as Angers and Lorient play out a scoreless draw

Despite three chances for Amine Sbaï, who tested the opposing goal three times, Angers and Lorient could not get past a scoreless draw at the Stade Raymond Kopa in Ligue 1.

Sbaï hits the woodwork and the frame three times as Angers and Lorient play out a scoreless draw

Amine Sbaï tested Lorient's goal three times, and three times he was denied: high off the crossbar, low off the post, and low along the ground right at the goalkeeper. That was, in a nutshell, the story of the 0-0 draw between Angers and Lorient at the Stade Raymond Kopa, a Ligue 1 match that had chances, shots and even some scoreboard drama, but no goals.

The script was set early. Lorient came out with more control of the ball and created the first clear chances: in the 5th minute, Ibrahima Baldé missed from point-blank range after a corner-kick delivery, and shortly after, in the 23rd minute, he again tried a header without success. Angers answered through Amine El Ouazzani, who forced a brilliant save from the visiting goalkeeper in the 24th minute with a left-footed effort that was headed for the top corner. El Ouazzani himself had to leave the field injured shortly after, in the 27th minute, making way for Jim Allevinah.

The first half ended without any real scare despite the back-and-forth: Isaak Touré and Montassar Talbi both tried headers for Lorient, and Jean-Victor Makengo also tested the home goalkeeper, all to no avail.

Sbaï's second half

In the second half, Angers took more of the attacking initiative, and Amine Sbaï became the nightmare of the visiting defense. In the 57th minute, his left-footed shot from inside the box was stopped right at the goal line. In the 66th minute, it sailed just over the bar. And in the 76th minute, with a low shot, he was denied once again by a crucial save. Three attempts, three stops: Lorient's goal stayed intact thanks to those interventions.

Lorient, for their part, kept causing problems from set pieces: Isaak Touré tried again in the 69th minute, and his shot was blocked in the 72nd. The match wound down in the closing minutes amid substitutions, a couple of yellow cards (Yassin Belkhdim and Nathaniel Adjei were booked for dangerous play) and offside calls that broke up the rhythm, until referee Azzedine Souifi brought an end to a draw that left both sides with the feeling of a missed opportunity.

The numbers behind the draw

The stats reflect an even match, with a slight edge in possession for the visitors but with Angers sharper in front of goal:

StatAngersLorient
Possession (%)47.552.5
Shots810
Shots on target51
Corners67
Passes490541
Fouls committed139

That gap between total shots and shots on target tells its own story: Angers put 5 of its 8 attempts on frame, while Lorient, despite more shots and more possession, managed just one on target. According to our expected-goals estimate calculated from the match's shots, Lorient generated 0.94 xG against 0.44 for Angers, which suggests the visiting side had the more dangerous chances even if they failed to turn them into shots on target.

The result also strayed from our pre-match projections: the preview gave Lorient a 46% chance of winning, to 23% for Angers and 31% for a draw, with combined expected goals of 2.3 (0.92 for Angers and 1.38 for Lorient). None of that held up: there was no winner, and the match fell well short of the projected goal total.

What it means in the standings

In the table, the draw leaves Lorient in ninth place with 12 points from 8 games played (3 wins, 3 draws and 2 losses), while Angers sit in 14th with 8 points from the same number of matches (2 wins, 2 draws and 4 losses). The gap between the two sides is 4 points, and this result doesn't shift much for either club: Lorient adds to its tally but doesn't climb, and Angers still needs more than chances created to pull itself out of the lower half of the table.
