Tomás Aranda Fractures Fibula in Training, Ruled Out for Rest of Season

A warmup rondo, a cleat that catches in the grass, and a fall that changes the plans for an entire half of the season. That's how simple, and how harsh, the moment was that wrecked Tomás Aranda's year.

Boca was preparing to visit Lanús for the 2026 Clausura Tournament when news arrived that nobody at the Xeneize wanted to hear: Aranda suffered a fractured fibula in his right leg during practice and will need surgery.

Diego Monroig broke the news on ESPN F12, describing how the play unfolded. According to the journalist, the player was doing a rondo with his teammates during the warmup portion of training when his cleats got caught on their own, with no contact involved, and he ended up on the ground in a lot of pain.

Right away, Boca's medical staff ran the necessary tests and confirmed what everyone feared: there's a fracture. The only somewhat reassuring news is that the tibia was not affected, which would have made the situation even more complicated.

A Blow for Arruabarrena

The injury comes at a delicate moment for the team, which loses one of its spark-plug players right as much of the rest of the season is being decided. For Rodolfo Arruabarrena, it means having to rework his options on a squad that was already stretched thin, and finding someone who can fill that spot without hurting the team's performance.

As for the timeline, recovery from a fractured fibula is usually estimated at 3 to 6 months, though it all depends on how the rehabilitation goes and the type of surgery he undergoes. If nothing else goes wrong along the way, the plan is for Aranda to be available for preseason in January 2027, meaning he'll essentially miss what remains of the current cycle.

For now, Boca's priority is making sure the surgery goes well and that the recovery process gets underway as soon as possible. Meanwhile, the coaching staff is already thinking about how to cover his absence for the match against Lanús and what's ahead on the schedule.
