Argentina and Brazil Reach 231 Meetings in International Cups Since 1960

Fluminense knocked out Independiente Rivadavia on penalties in the round of 16 of the 2026 Libertadores and, without fully realizing it, added another chapter to one of the longest running stories in South American soccer. Because every time an Argentine club and a Brazilian club meet in an international cup, they're really writing the same tale, one that has now reached 231 meetings since it all began back in 1960.

Why 1960 and not earlier? There was an earlier attempt in 1948, the South American Champions Championship, in which seven associations played a round robin. There, Vasco da Gama, the eventual champion, drew 0-0 with River. But since that was a league format rather than a knockout, it doesn't count in the official tally. The first true head to head duel didn't arrive until the 1960 Libertadores (the one Peñarol won), when San Lorenzo eliminated Bahia in the quarterfinals: 3-0 at Huracan's stadium, followed by a 3-2 loss in the return leg that wasn't enough for the Brazilians.

From then until now, the overall balance is close but tilts toward the Argentines: 118 wins to 113. That count covers every knockout tournament played between the two countries: the Libertadores, the Supercopa, the Sudamericana, the Mercosur Cup, the Recopa, the Conmebol Cup and a few shorter lived competitions like the Supercopa Master, the Conmebol Master and the Nicolas Leoz Gold Cup. One detail stands out: until 1988, when the Supercopa was created, the Libertadores was the only official continental tournament. In those first 28 years there were only 10 meetings, featuring San Lorenzo, Independiente, Estudiantes and Boca on the Argentine side, and Palmeiras, Santos and Cruzeiro for Brazil. In other words, almost everything meaningful in this rivalry has happened in the last 35 years.

The Libertadores, the Tournament That Changed Hands

That's where the heart of this story lies, and where the shift in eras shows most clearly. Brazil took the lead in 2025 and now holds a 45 to 41 edge in the Copa Libertadores. Boca is the winningest club in the entire history of these clashes, with 18 wins and 7 losses, while Sao Paulo leads among Brazilian sides with 6 wins and 3 defeats.

In terms of titles, the balance also tipped last year: Flamengo beat Palmeiras in the final, leaving the count at 25 to 25. In final round showdowns, though, Argentina still leads 9-7. What's beyond dispute is the current trend: Brazil has won 17 of the last 20 Libertadores meetings since 2021, the most one sided stretch this rivalry has seen.

Supercopa, Mercosur and the Cups That No Longer Exist

In the Supercopa of American champions, which ran from 1988 to 1997, Argentina again came out ahead: 25 series won to 20, with 4 finals to 2. When that tournament morphed into the Copa Mercosur, the power shifted: Brazil took three titles to Argentina's one and won 10 series to 4. The Conmebol Cup, another now defunct competition, leaned Argentine: 5-2. And among the short lived Supercopa Master, Conmebol Master and Gold Cup, there were six meetings that ended in a perfect 3-3 split.

The competitions still alive today are the Sudamericana and the Recopa, and in both Argentina holds the edge. In the Sudamericana, after Lanus eliminated Fluminense in the quarterfinals and beat Atletico Mineiro in last year's final, Argentina's advantage stretched to 35 to 29 (5-2 in finals). In the Recopa, the Lanus side was once again decisive: its win over Flamengo put Argentina in front for the first time in a long while, by a tight 5 to 4.

With all these numbers on the table, it's clear neither side holds definitive supremacy. Each competition tells its own version of the fight, and the final verdict depends on which tournament you look at and which decade you're talking about. The only certainty is that, edition after edition, Argentines and Brazilians will keep adding chapters to the continent's most repeated club rivalry.
