Argentina spreads nearly 70 players across Europe's top five leagues on the road to 2026

Start counting the names and you'll lose track before you reach the end: Alvarez, Romero, Simeone, Musso, Martinez, Fernandez, Lautaro, Dybala, Paz. Argentina didn't stop exporting talent after the 2026 World Cup, quite the opposite. The 2026-27 season kicks off with nearly 70 Argentines scattered across Europe's top five leagues, and among them are 19 of the 26 players Lionel Scaloni brought to the World Cup.

The most striking detail is where the largest concentration of World Cup winners ended up: Atletico Madrid. Diego Simeone will have Julian Alvarez, Cuti Romero, Giuliano Simeone and Juan Musso under his command, an Argentine core as large as any seen at a single European club in recent memory. Cuti's arrival from Tottenham deepened that Albiceleste presence, just as the Colchoneros said goodbye to Nahuel Molina (off to Roma) and Thiago Almada (back at River Plate).

La Liga adds another heavyweight name: Giovani Lo Celso remains a key creative piece for Real Betis. Around those established players sits a long list of countrymen: Juan Foyth at Villarreal, Guido Rodriguez at Valencia, Valentin Gomez also at Betis, Lucas Boye and Nicolas Valentini at Alaves, Augusto Batalla at Rayo Vallecano and Facundo Buonanotte, a recent addition at Elche.

The Premier League reshuffles the Argentine map

In England the movement was strong enough to turn the usual distribution upside down. Emiliano Martinez left Aston Villa to man the goal at Chelsea, while Lisandro Martinez remains a fixture at Manchester United. Geronimo Rulli, who was Dibu's backup at the World Cup, ended up at none other than Manchester City, a club that also brought in Enzo Fernandez for a hefty fee. Alexis Mac Allister continues as a Liverpool mainstay.

That backbone is joined by Valentin Barco, who left Racing Strasbourg to try his luck at Chelsea, and Marco Senesi, who will fill the Tottenham spot vacated by Cuti Romero after standing out at Bournemouth. Exequiel Palacios, for his part, swapped Bayer Leverkusen for Ipswich Town. In total there are eight Argentine World Cup winners in the Premier League, not counting younger players like Alejandro Garnacho (new at Aston Villa), Nicolas Dominguez, Carlos Alcaraz, Emiliano Buendia and Aaron Anselmino, all looking to lock down a permanent spot with the national team.

Lautaro remains the standard bearer in Italy

In Serie A there's no question who's in charge: Lautaro Martinez continues to lead Inter's attack and remains the most recognized Argentine in Italian football. He shares the league with Nico Gonzalez at Juventus, Nico Paz at Como and Nahuel Molina, who joined a Roma side that also features Paulo Dybala, Santiago Castro and Matias Soule. Franco Mastantuono arrived on loan at Fiorentina, and the list keeps going with names like Giovanni Simeone at Torino, Benjamin Dominguez at Sassuolo and the recently arrived David Romero, who made the jump from Tigre to Parma.

Ligue 1 and the Bundesliga round out the picture with less volume but no shortage of quality: Nicolas Tagliafico remains at Olympique Lyon as the only World Cup winner in France, while Joaquin Panichelli will try to make up lost ground at Racing Strasbourg after the injury that kept him out of the World Cup. In Germany, Facundo Medina joined Bayer Leverkusen from Marseille, and Nicolas Capaldo will look for the consistency at Hamburg that could bring him back into the national team picture.

Just seven World Cup winners fall outside this map: Lionel Messi, Rodrigo De Paul, Leandro Paredes, Gonzalo Montiel, Nicolas Otamendi, Thiago Almada and Jose Manuel Lopez, all playing outside the top five leagues. The rest, practically the entire backbone of Scaloni's squad, is once again spread across Spain, England, Italy, Germany and France, just as it has been every season for years.
