Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay Are Already in the 2030 World Cup Without Playing Qualifying

Three national teams already have their ticket punched for the 2030 World Cup before a single match of South American Qualifying has even been played. Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay go in automatically as hosts of the tournament, and that forced CONMEBOL to figure out how to build a qualifying tournament that stays competitive with that quirk on the table.

The news came from FIFA, which informed the South American body that those three teams will not free up a qualifying spot. In other words, they will play the qualifiers just like everyone else, but their place in the World Cup is already guaranteed beforehand. That leaves just three and a half berths up for grabs among the other seven teams on the continent.

So who will be fighting over those spots? Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru and Venezuela will battle it out among themselves for those three direct tickets, while also sorting out who ends up with the spot in FIFA's playoff.

Round robin, no major changes

Despite the unprecedented scenario of having three teams qualified from the outset, CONMEBOL's idea is to leave the usual formula untouched. The plan, the only one on the table for now, is to keep the home and away round robin format among the ten federations. That means Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay will play the same number of matches as the other seven teams, even though their place at the World Cup no longer depends on the results.

Official confirmation will still take some time. The next meeting between the ten South American federations is set for three weeks from now, and only after that gathering is the full scheme expected to be finalized and announced. That's according to Esteban Edul on ESPN F12.

As for when the competition kicks off, the idea being floated is for qualifying to begin in the FIFA Date at the end of March 2027, though that date isn't fully locked in yet. In fact, there are voices within the organization considering pushing the start back to September of that same year, so the final calendar will also depend on what gets decided in the coming weeks.

For now, here's what's certain: three teams already in without needing to earn a single point, seven fighting to fill out South America's quota, and a format that, unusual as the situation may be, would stay the same as always. We'll have to wait for that key meeting to find out if any of this changes or if it's finally confirmed just as it's been laid out so far.
