Argentinos Juniors holds off Tigre's push to stay in first place
With a brace in the first half and a saved penalty, Argentinos Juniors edged past Tigre 2-1, as the visitors wasted more than they deserved despite dominating possession.

It took Argentinos Juniors just five minutes to break the game open at the Diego Armando Maradona stadium. Kevin Gutiérrez tested from outside the box with a right-footed shot that snuck in low, just inside the left post, off an assist from Matías Giménez, and the home side was already up 1-0 before Tigre had barely touched the ball. The final score ended up 2-1 in favor of Argentinos Juniors, but the path to get there had a bit of everything: a second goal off a header before the break, a missed penalty, and a second half in which Tigre pushed hard without finding the equalizer.
The second blow came right at the end of the first half. In the 41st minute, Gastón Verón rose in the middle of the box to head home a cross from Sebastián Prieto into the top left corner: 2-0, sending Argentinos Juniors into halftime with the game well in hand. But the start of the second half brought the home side its first scare. Just minutes into the restart, the referee reviewed a play in the box and VAR confirmed a penalty for Tigre. Jabes Saralegui stepped up to take it, but his right-footed shot was saved low to the ground. The miss seemed like a reprieve for Argentinos Juniors, though it didn't last long: in the 56th minute, Jerónimo Dómina finished with his right foot from the right side of the box, also into the top left corner, assisted by Saralegui himself, making it 2-1, which ended up being the final score.
From there, Tigre poured forward. Ignacio Peluffo had a shot that crashed off the crossbar in the 79th minute, along with other chances down the flanks, but the visitors lacked the finishing touch to force an equalizer. Argentinos Juniors, with substitutions from Facundo Carrizo, Diego Porcel and Facundo Jainikoski, managed the final minutes well and held on to the lead until the final whistle.
What the numbers say
Possession belonged to the visitors, who controlled the ball and the passing more, but they couldn't translate that edge into results until the game was already slipping away from them.
| Stat | Argentinos Juniors | Tigre |
|---|---|---|
| Possession (%) | 44.5 | 55.5 |
| Shots | 13 | 13 |
| Shots on target | 5 | 4 |
| Corners | 4 | 3 |
| Passes | 362 | 444 |
| Fouls committed | 14 | 11 |
The estimated xG based on the match's shots also reflects that contrast between dominance and effectiveness: Tigre generated 2.096 expected goals compared to Argentinos Juniors's 0.917, a figure we calculated after the match that confirms the visitors deserved, at least on paper, a bit more than a single goal.
The preview we published gave Argentinos Juniors a 44% chance of winning, 35% for a draw and 21% for Tigre, with total expected goals of 1.81. The result ended up matching that forecast: the favorite won, though the match delivered more drama (and more chances for Tigre) than that projection suggested.
What the result means
With this win, Argentinos Juniors remains atop Group B with 21 points through 11 matches played, the product of six wins, three draws and two losses. Tigre, meanwhile, sits in 11th place with 12 points after three wins, three draws and five losses, a 9-point gap from the home side that underscores the distance between the two clubs in the standings. For Argentinos Juniors, it's another key haul of points at home; for Tigre, another away trip where a strong second-half effort wasn't enough to overcome a rough start.
