Armenia Routs Latvia With Two Goals to Open Nations League Play in First Place

The opening goal came in the most classic fashion imaginable: a corner kick, a well-placed cross and a header that was impossible to stop. In the 30th minute, Georgi Harutyunyan powered a header into the top corner off a cross from Eduard Spertsyan, and that strike was enough to send Armenia on its way to a 2-0 win over Latvia at Vazgen Sargsyan Republican Stadium in the UEFA Nations League.

The match, part of group C2, followed a fairly clear script from early on. Armenia controlled possession and created most of the chances, while Latvia defended in an organized shape and looked to hit on the counter. In fact, Latvia had its best moment before Armenia's goal: Vladislavs Gutkovskis clipped the crossbar in the 19th minute and troubled the home side again six minutes later with another shot from inside the box that was blocked. But those were more or less the only serious warning signs for the home goal all match long.

Armenia kept pressing down the flanks and piling up corner kicks (it earned several in a row between the 6th and 15th minutes) until that persistence paid off with Harutyunyan's header. Before halftime, Artur Serobyan also came close with a shot that skimmed the crossbar, and Eduard Spertsyan tried his luck from outside the box. The first half ended with Armenia ahead on the scoreboard and clearly the better side on the field.

The Second Goal and the Final Stretch

The second half didn't change the picture much. Latvia tried to spark its attack with substitutions (Maksims Tonisevs, Roberts Uldrikis and Oskars Vientiess all came on, among others), but it was Armenia that struck again. In the 74th minute, Artur Gharibyan, who had entered the match just minutes earlier, finished with his right foot from the center of the box after an assist from Zhirayr Shaghoyan to make it a final 2-0.

With the result already decided, the closing stretch brought more routine play than drama. Latvia had one last chance in stoppage time, when Dennis Cirkin rattled a shot off the post, but it wasn't enough to get on the scoreboard. On the Armenian side, Edgar Sevikyan also forced a good save from the opposing goalkeeper in added time. Referee Martin Matosa allowed four extra minutes, and that was that.

The Numbers Back Up the Dominance

The match statistics confirm what was clear on the field: Armenia was in control for all 90 minutes, both in terms of ball possession and scoring chances created.

The xG generated in the match, an estimate based on shot location, also reflects that superiority: 1.888 for Armenia compared with just 0.376 for Latvia. Those numbers line up with the home side's 14 shots against the visitors' 5.

The win leaves Armenia atop group C2 with 3 points after one match played, with a goal differential of plus-2. Latvia, meanwhile, remains without points and sits at minus-2, in fourth place in the group, where Montenegro and Cyprus also sit with one point each after drawing in their respective matchup. With just one matchday in the books, there's still plenty of the group left to play out, but Armenia couldn't have asked for a better start: clinical up front and solid at the back, with no real scares at its own goal throughout the match.
