Arouca rallies past Maritimo in Liga Portugal, moves into third
The home side flipped the scoreline with goals from Espen van Ee and Barbero to claim a 2-1 win at the Estadio Municipal de Arouca.

Maritimo arrived in Arouca with a plan that worked for twenty six minutes: strike fast and hold on. Martin Tejon delivered on the first part with a low, precise finish into the left post off a corner kick. But Arouca answered before halftime and went on to flip the scoreline in the second half, taking the 2-1 win at the Estadio Municipal de Arouca in Liga Portugal play.
The home side had given fair warning from the start. In the 11th minute, Espen van Ee had already crashed a shot off the crossbar, and both Nais Djouahra and Taichi Fukui had chances of their own before the match broke open. Tejon's goal, though, landed like a bucket of cold water right as Arouca was controlling more of the ball. The response didn't take long: in the 43rd minute, Espen van Ee curled a left footed strike from the right side of the box into the top corner, assisted by Alfonso Trezza, making it 1-1 at the break.
The second half was only nine minutes old when Arouca completed the turnaround. Barbero, who had already come close with a header that went wide in the first half, this time headed home from close range off a cross from Pablo Gozalbez, making it 2-1, a scoreline that would hold up. From there, the game opened up: Maritimo tried to respond with substitutions, bringing on Bamba, Ayuma, Boakye and Varela, and created danger through Paulo Henrique, who tested his luck several times in the closing stretch without finding the net. Arouca, for its part, turned to its bench with Nandin, Mansilla, Flores, Santos and Climent, and came close to extending the lead with a shot from Mateo Flores that was saved low to the ground.
What the numbers say
Arouca's control of the match was reflected in the stats, though the gap wasn't overwhelming. The home side had more possession, more shots and more clear-cut chances than a Maritimo side that matched them in corners and fouls.
| Stat | Arouca | Maritimo |
|---|---|---|
| Possession (%) | 51.9 | 48.1 |
| Shots | 17 | 12 |
| Shots on target | 7 | 4 |
| Big chances | 2 | 1 |
| Corners | 2 | 3 |
| Passes | 491 | 456 |
| Fouls committed | 8 | 9 |
The post-match xG numbers, calculated from shot locations, also back up what played out on the field: 1.754 for Arouca against 0.995 for Maritimo, a gap that confirms the home side's greater attacking volume without being decisive.
The pre-match odds had made Arouca the favorite, with a 51% chance of victory compared to 23% for Maritimo and a 26% chance of a draw, along with an expected goals projection of 1.75 for the home side and 1.13 for the visitors, for a total of 2.88. The final result, with three goals split between the two teams, ended up fairly close to that script, though getting there included the scare of falling behind before halftime.
What it means in the standings
With this result, Arouca reaches 9 points from 4 games played, with a record of 3 wins and 1 loss, sitting in third place in the league, just 1 point behind the top spots held by Sporting CP and FC Porto. Maritimo, meanwhile, remains on 7 points after 4 games, the product of 2 wins, 1 draw and 1 loss, in fifth place, just 2 points behind Arouca in the standings.
Arouca leaves the impression of a team that doesn't fold at the first setback: it conceded first and still found a way to flip the scoreline through different means, a long-range strike into the top corner and a close-range header. For Maritimo, the takeaway is that of a rival that competed on equal terms for long stretches of the match but couldn't hold onto its early lead or capitalize on the chances it created in the second half.
