Arsenal seals Ezri Konsa signing for $69.4 million
The English center back arrives to bolster the backline following injuries to Saliba and Timber.

Arteta needed a center back and wasted no time going after one. Arsenal struck a deal with Aston Villa to sign Ezri Konsa for a fee close to 51 million pounds ($69.4 million), according to ESPN. The move solves, in one stroke, a problem that had been weighing on the London club's locker room for weeks.
The negotiation was anything but quick. The Gunners tested the waters with an opening bid of 30 million pounds, a figure Villa Park dismissed almost immediately. The Birmingham club made clear it would only entertain offers north of 60 million. That's when Arsenal shifted its approach: they built in add-ons, raised the offer and eventually won Villa over.
Why the urgency? Because Mikel Arteta was left counting bodies at the back after injuries to William Saliba and Jurriën Timber, two players who are typically automatic starters. Konsa arrives to plug that gap, and he's doing so eagerly: sources say the defender was very keen on the move, that personal terms are essentially sorted, and that he'll undergo the standard medical this Thursday before signing.
Before settling on Konsa, Arsenal had explored another option. The defending Premier League champions inquired about Jarell Quansah of Bayer Leverkusen, but the price the German club wanted was seen as too steep in London. That rejection sped up the pivot toward the English center back, whose eventual price tag ended up much closer to what Aston Villa had in mind. Konsa is signing through 2028, so this isn't an emergency patch but a medium-term investment.
A defender with a World Cup run behind him
Konsa's name didn't come out of nowhere. The 28-year-old center back was a key figure for the England side that finished in third place at the 2026 World Cup. He started the first six matches of the tournament and even got on the scoresheet against France in the third-place match. That level of performance with the national team factored heavily into Arsenal's decision to go all in for him, even if it meant paying considerably more than they'd initially hoped.
Konsa, who can also play right back, gives Arteta a versatile option right when he needed one most. With this addition, he becomes Arsenal's fifth signing of the transfer window, following the permanent move for Piero Hincapié and the additions of Illan Meslier, Christos Tzolis and Bruno Guimaraes. It's a list that makes pretty clear where the club focused its efforts this window.
