Arsenal Has the Deepest Squad in the Champions League
A breakdown of the competition's ten best squads measures far more than raw talent: variety of profiles, defensive balance and the ability to change a game without abandoning the plan.
Ten minutes. Sometimes that's all it takes for a Champions League tie to be decided by a substitution. A late injury, a game that grinds to a halt, an opponent who finds a way to shut down the best player on the other side: that's when you find out which squad actually has depth and which one only has eleven good names. With that idea in mind, a ranking was put together that measures something beyond pure talent: quality of the starting eleven, depth of the bench, variety of profiles, balance across the lines and the ability to change a match without changing the plan.
The bottom of the table belongs to teams with clear strengths but also identifiable cracks. Manchester United closes out the top 10 thanks to Bruno Fernandes's creativity and the additions of Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos, who give the midfield more variety, though its defensive balance still raises questions. One spot up, Inter leans on the compatibility of pieces like Bastoni, Akanji, Pavard and Stones to sustain different back-three setups, though it lacks specialists capable of unbalancing defenses out wide.
Atlético Madrid sits in eighth with an attack full of different solutions: Julián Álvarez, Sørloth, Jonathan David and Lookman combine pressing, depth and aerial threat, while Álex Baena adds the final pass. Liverpool follows close behind, with Alexander Isak, Gakpo, Barcola and Florian Wirtz offering different routes to the box, though the defensive reshuffle remains a question mark.
The Middle Ground: Plenty of Creators, One Clear Limit
Bayern Munich comes in sixth with an arsenal of creators (Musiala, Olise, Luis Díaz) that runs into one specific limit: there's no real replacement for what Harry Kane provides, whether as a goalscorer or as a link man dropping into midfield. Barcelona sits fifth with a striking number of players capable of combining between the lines (Pedri, Gavi, Dani Olmo, Fermín López, Lamine Yamal), though gathering so many attackers means defensive cover has to be managed carefully.
Manchester City breaks into fourth place thanks to its ability to switch between control and verticality: Enzo Fernández, Rayan Cherki and Jérémy Doku give the team different ways of getting forward, though integrating a revamped midfield and the possible absence of Erling Haaland remain obstacles to climbing any higher.
The Podium: Talent to Spare Almost Everywhere
Real Madrid finishes third despite having, as the ranking itself acknowledges, more than enough arguments to top any list on pure individual quality alone. The problem isn't talent, it's fit: Valverde, Camavinga, Tchouaméni, Arda Güler and Bernardo Silva compete for similar spaces, and attacking fullbacks like Trent or Carreras demand very precise cover.
PSG takes the silver medal thanks to something few teams manage: players who multiply their functions. Dembélé, Kvaratskhelia, Doué, Ferran Torres and Akliouche can shift position and combination mid-game, something Vitinha, João Neves, Fabián Ruiz and Zaïre-Emery also replicate in midfield. The limitation shows up in the air, where the Paris side has fewer clear aerial threats.
The top spot belongs to Arsenal, which according to the analysis offers "the most complete answer to the question that defines this ranking." Saliba, Gabriel, Konsa, Calafiori and Ben White sustain multiple combinations at the back; Rice, Zubimendi, Bruno Guimarães and Ødegaard adjust the midfield to whatever the game demands; and up front, Gyökeres and Havertz represent two entirely different ways of occupying the forward line. Bukayo Saka, though, remains an influence that's almost impossible to replace when he's missing.
