Arsenal outlasts Como on penalties after scoreless draw in regulation

The London club sealed its spot in the club friendlies despite falling short of converting its dominance into a win in regulation.

Arsenal outlasts Como on penalties after scoreless draw in regulation

Arsenal beat Como 4-3 on penalties after playing to a 1-1 draw in the 90 minutes, in a Club Friendlies clash held at the Emirates Stadium. Regulation time settled nothing: it was from the penalty spot that the London side sealed its progression, eliminating the Italian club despite both teams finishing level on the night.

A draw built in the opening half hour

Arsenal set the tone from the start and served notice well before actually taking the lead. Eberechi Eze clipped the crossbar with a direct free kick just three minutes in, and shortly after that Gabriel Magalhaes tested the keeper with a header while Gabriel Jesus rattled the left post, all inside the first five minutes. That early pressure paid off in the 32nd minute: Myles Lewis-Skelly curled home a left-footed finish from outside the box, set up by Gabriel Martinelli, to make it 1-0.

Como, though, refused to sit back and found its reward before the break. Martin Baturina had already given a warning with a shot from near the box in the 20th minute, and in the 42nd minute he struck again, firing into the top left corner off a Mattia Liberali assist to level the score at 1-1, the score at halftime.

In the second half, both sides made heavy use of their benches and created chances, but the ball didn't go in again. Gabriel Martinelli, Viktor Gyokeres and Cristhian Mosquera all tried their luck for Arsenal, while Jesus Rodriguez, in the closing minutes, tested the opposing goalkeeper more than once for Como. None of those attempts changed the score, and the match went to a penalty shootout.

The shootout

In the penalty shootout, Luis Milla opened the scoring for Como and Martin Odegaard answered for Arsenal. Maxence Caqueret put the Italians back in front, but Kai Havertz leveled things again. Ivan Smolcic missed for Como, and Bruno Guimaraes made it count to put the hosts ahead, though Jesus Rodriguez equalized once more. In the end, misses from Noni Madueke and Alvaro Morata sealed it for Arsenal, who won the shootout 4-3.

The numbers behind the dominance

The stats back up what the game showed: Arsenal was clearly superior in chance creation, though it couldn't turn that into more goals over the 90 minutes.

The estimated post-match xG, calculated from shot locations, shows an even starker gap: 2.859 for Arsenal against just 0.363 for Como, a difference that reflects the quality of the chances the hosts created, especially early in the match, though it never showed up on the final scoreline.

What the preview said versus what happened

The projection published before the match gave Arsenal a 34% chance of winning, a 29% chance of a draw and a 37% chance of a Como win, with expected goals of 1.33 for the hosts and 1.38 for the visitors. The way the game actually played out drifted quite a bit from that balanced forecast: Arsenal clearly dominated in terms of volume of play and chances created, though the final result ended up being the draw that the preview also flagged as a possibility, ultimately decided in the penalty lottery.

What the match leaves behind

Arsenal takes the spot in the next round despite failing to close out the game in the 90 minutes, a reminder that footballing superiority doesn't always translate into an immediate result. Como, for its part, walks away with the feeling of having gone toe to toe with a rival that outperformed it in nearly every statistical category, but wasn't able to finish the job before the shootout from twelve yards.
