Asamoah Gyan trades ambassador role for operational post at Ghana's federation

Asamoah Gyan won't just be remembered as a legend for his goals anymore. Now he has an office, duties and a concrete task inside the Ghana Football Association (GFA): Club and Player Relations Manager, a position the GFA confirmed this Monday that puts him squarely in the day to day operations of the Black Stars.

The news comes just four months after Gyan was named an ambassador for Ghana's national teams, so his ties with the federation have kept growing in a short span. According to the GFA, the record-setting forward will act as a bridge between the coaching staff, the players and their clubs, handling communication around call-ups and player welfare. He'll also provide mentorship and support to the squad.

"As Club and Player Relations Manager, Gyan will serve as a key liaison between the technical team, players and clubs, facilitate communication around call-ups and player welfare, and provide mentorship and support to the squad," the federation said in a statement. It added something that sums up well why they thought of him for the job: "His experience, leadership and deep connection with the current generation of players is expected to be a major asset for the team."

The GFA went further, describing the position as "a new strategic role focused on strengthening the relationship between the national team, players and their respective clubs, as well as improving player welfare and engagement." In other words, Gyan is moving from being a public face for promotion and sponsorships (that was the focus of his ambassador appointment back in May, which also centered on youth football and fan outreach) to a far more hands-on role, working closely with Carlos Queiroz and the locker room.

The timing isn't a coincidence. Ghana is now starting qualification for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations after reaching the round of 16 at the 2026 World Cup, where they were eliminated by Colombia (1-0). Queiroz, for his part, was confirmed by the GFA just a month ago to continue leading the project, so Gyan joins a coaching setup that already has its sights set on the new cycle.

When he was unveiled as ambassador in May, shortly before the team traveled to the World Cup in North America, Gyan made his gratitude toward Ghanaian football clear:

It's not hard to see why the federation wanted him close by: Gyan is Ghana's all-time leading scorer with 51 goals for the national team. He played at the 2006, 2010 and 2014 World Cups, scored six goals across those tournaments (the most by an African player in men's World Cup history) and netted Ghana's first ever World Cup goal, against the Czech Republic in 2006. Four years later he was a key figure as the Black Stars advanced to the quarterfinals in South Africa. He eventually went on to captain the team, up until his final match for the national side in 2019.

Ghana, which missed out on the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, already knows its rivals for the next round of qualifying: the Black Stars landed in a group with Ivory Coast, Gambia and Somalia, on the road to the 2027 tournament, which will be held in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda.
