Aston Villa Let It Slip in Two Minutes as Ajer Salvages 2-2 for Brentford
Brentford leveled at Villa Park through Ajer just two minutes after McGinn had put Aston Villa 2-1 up.

Aston Villa had the win in hand for twelve minutes and let it slip in two. John McGinn had made it 2-1 in the 76th minute with a finish that looked set to seal a match his side, under Unai Emery, had controlled from start to finish. But Kristoffer Ajer popped up just two minutes later to make it 2-2, the final score at Villa Park in a Premier League clash that ended bittersweet for the home side.
Brentford struck first, and did so in a hurry: in the 9th minute, Yehor Yarmoliuk connected with a right-footed shot from the center of the box that found the middle of the goal to make it 0-1. Aston Villa's response was immediate: two minutes later, Nicolas Jackson poked in a right-footed effort from the center of the area, into the right side of the net, to level it at 1-1. That was the score at halftime, after a first half in which both sides created clear chances, including a McGinn shot that the visiting goalkeeper managed to stop low down right before the break.
The comeback that wasn't
In the second half, Aston Villa remained the sharper side. Johan Manzambi tested the Brentford goal time and again from distance, and Joao Gomes, Emiliano Buendia and Jackson himself kept pushing without finding the second goal, until, in the 76th minute, McGinn showed up on the left side of the box to beat the Brentford keeper with his right foot, assisted by Manzambi. The goal seemed to hand Aston Villa a lead that reflected their control for long stretches of the match.
But Brentford answered almost immediately. Just two minutes after the 2-1, Kristoffer Ajer slotted home low, by the left post, from a Jaidon Anthony assist, to draw level at a score that would hold up as the final result. In stoppage time, with six additional minutes added on, Ibrahim Mbaye had one last attempt that was tipped onto the crossbar, but the scoreboard did not move again.
What the numbers say
Aston Villa were sharper in shots and had more of the ball, though that edge never translated into a wider margin on the scoreboard.
| Stat | Aston Villa | Brentford |
|---|---|---|
| Possession (%) | 52.1 | 47.9 |
| Shots | 20 | 14 |
| Shots on target | 7 | 4 |
| Corners | 2 | 2 |
| Passes | 407 | 358 |
| Fouls committed | 7 | 24 |
By our expected goals estimate, calculated from the match's shots, Aston Villa generated 1.94 xG to Brentford's 1.30, a gap that backs up the home side's attacking dominance, though it wasn't enough to secure all three points. It's also worth noting that Brentford committed 24 fouls to Aston Villa's mere 7, an imbalance that shaped much of the match's rhythm.
Beforehand, our model had projected a 42% chance of an Aston Villa win, a 28% chance of a draw and a 30% chance of a Brentford win, with total expected goals of 2.82. The final result, a four-goal draw, partially bore that out: a tie was far from the likeliest outcome, but given how tight the odds were among the three results, it was hardly a major shock either.
What the result means
With this draw, Aston Villa sit on 5 points from 6 games played, while Brentford have 10 from the same number of matches, a 5-point gap between the two in the standings. For the Villa Park side, the result leaves the feeling of two points dropped after having the match in hand; for Brentford, on the other hand, it's a point that extends an unbeaten run in their recent outings, earned thanks to the resilience they showed once again in the closing minutes.
