Aston Villa Let Victory Slip Away Against Fulham at Villa Park
McGinn missed a penalty and Villa surrendered the win after a Suzuki own goal that ended in a 1-1 draw against Fulham.

John McGinn had Aston Villa's second goal on his foot, literally, when the ball cannoned off the crossbar from his 15th-minute penalty. That miss ended up mattering: Aston Villa and Fulham drew 1-1 at Villa Park, in a Premier League match where Unai Emery's side let slip a lead that looked under control.
The match opened with Aston Villa dominating the early minutes, forcing corners and headed chances that failed to find the target. In the 11th minute, a handball penalty committed by Sander Berge inside the box was confirmed by VAR a minute later. McGinn stepped up, but his left-footed effort crashed off the crossbar and the score stayed level. Villa didn't dwell on it for long: they kept pushing, and in the 38th minute the reward arrived. Nicolas Jackson finished with his right foot from the center of the box, after an assist from Johan Manzambi, to make it 1-0 at halftime.
The second half told a different story. Fulham, who had controlled more of the ball for much of the match, began to create clear chances through Oscar Bobb, Shea Charles and Alex Iwobi. The equalizer came in the least expected way: in the 63rd minute, an own goal from Zion Suzuki made it 1-1, and the score held until the final whistle despite both sides' efforts. Aston Villa turned to the bench, bringing on Ibrahim Mbaye, Emiliano Buendia, Joao Gomes, Ross Barkley and Alejandro Garnacho, while Fulham also freshened up their lineup, but neither side found the second goal that would have delivered three points.
What the Numbers Say
Fulham controlled possession and finished with more shots on target, a fair reflection of how the second half played out. Aston Villa, on the other hand, was more clinical with the clear chances it created, especially in the first half.
| Stat | Aston Villa | Fulham |
|---|---|---|
| Possession (%) | 45 | 55 |
| Shots | 16 | 14 |
| Shots on target | 3 | 5 |
| Big chances | 3 | 2 |
| Corners | 7 | 7 |
| Passes | 434 | 536 |
| Fouls committed | 7 | 12 |
The xG estimated after the fact by our model, calculated from shot locations, gives Fulham 3.118 against Aston Villa's 2.261. That gap backs up the sense that the visitors created more danger than the final score ended up reflecting, especially given the volume of chances they built in the second half.
The result also contrasts with what we'd projected before kickoff. Our preview gave Aston Villa a 54% chance of victory, with just 19% for Fulham and 27% for a draw, with expected goals of 1.70 for the home side and 0.91 for the visitors. Fulham not only avoided the defeat the model considered unlikely, but ended up generating more xG in the match itself than what we'd assigned them before a ball was kicked.
What the Table Shows
With this draw, Aston Villa sits in ninth place with 12 points, while Fulham is 15th with 9, three points apart. Neither side managed the leap it needed, and the point earned leaves both clubs in the Premier League's midtable, still far from the positions that truly matter at the top.
Aston Villa is left with the feeling of an opportunity missed: they dominated long stretches of the match, took the lead, and even had the penalty to extend the advantage before the first goal was even scored. Fulham, on the other hand, walks away with a point that, given the chances created in the second half, isn't a bad outcome at all.
