Athletic Club dominates but settles for a draw against Elche at San Mames

The home side controlled the match with 66.6% possession and 19 shots, but a penalty in the 48th minute complicated the afternoon and Williams' goal wasn't enough for the win.

Athletic Club dominated from start to finish, piling up chance after chance, and still had to settle for a 1-1 draw against Elche at San Mames. The match, part of LaLiga, got complicated for the home side just moments into the second half, when a penalty flipped the script on a game they had controlled without any real scares up to that point.

The first half was a one-sided Bilbao affair without reward. Oihan Sancet, Iñaki Williams, Yuri Berchiche and Robert Navarro (who rattled the crossbar in the 40th minute) tested Matias Dituro time and again, but the scoreboard refused to budge and the teams went into the break level at zero.

The blow came fast after the restart. In the 48th minute, Jesus Areso fouled German Valera inside the box and the referee pointed to the spot. Facundo Buonanotte made no mistake, striking with his left foot into the top corner to put Elche up 1-0 in the 49th minute, completely against the run of play.

Athletic Club didn't unravel and kept pushing. The equalizer came in the 78th minute: Alex Berenguer, who had just come on, set up Iñaki Williams, who finished with his left foot from close range to make it a final 1-1. The home side chased the winner all the way to the end, with Sancet and Maroan Sannadi buzzing around the opposing box in stoppage time (six additional minutes were played), but the score stayed put.

Dominance that didn't translate into the result

The numbers make clear who ran the show. Athletic Club finished with 66.6% possession, fired off 19 shots to Elche's mere 3, and generated, according to our estimate calculated after the fact based on shot location, an xG of 3.37 compared to the visitors' 0.84. That gap between what was created and what was scored sums up the afternoon: plenty of control, not enough sharpness when it mattered.

Before the match, our projection gave Athletic Club a 47% chance of winning, a 28% chance of a draw and a 25% chance of an Elche victory, with expected goals of 1.58 for the home side and 1.08 for the visitors. The result ended up matching the draw scenario we had in mind, though the way the game unfolded, with such a lopsided edge for Athletic Club, suggests the split points owe more to Elche's clinical finishing in key moments than to an evenly matched contest.

What the point leaves behind

With this result, Athletic Club stays at 7 points following a record of 2 wins, 1 draw and 2 losses in the competition, while Elche moves to 2 points with a record of 0 wins, 2 draws and 3 losses. The gap between the two sides in the standings stands at 5 points. For the home side, the draw leaves a sense of a missed opportunity despite being clearly the better team; for Elche, it's a point rescued thanks to their efficiency from the penalty spot on an afternoon when they barely set foot in the opponent's half.
