Atlanta United stuns Minnesota United at Allianz Field, wins 2-1 in MLS action
Tristan Muyumba scored the decisive goal in the 77th minute to lift the visitors to victory, even though the home side controlled most of the match.

Atlanta United pulled off a surprise at Allianz Field, edging Minnesota United FC 2-1 in an MLS matchup where the home side controlled much of the play but couldn't turn that dominance into goals. Tristan Muyumba's decisive strike in the 77th minute ultimately punished a Minnesota side that had fought back hard after falling behind on the scoreboard.
A back and forth affair
Atlanta struck first. In the 36th minute, off a corner kick, Tomás Jacob connected on a right footed effort from inside the box that found the top left corner to make it 0-1. Before that goal, the visitors had already produced the clearer chances of the first half, with attempts from Júnior Alonso and Stian Gregersen failing to find the target, along with a shot from Miguel Almirón that was blocked.
Minnesota, which also created danger through Anthony Markanich and Tomás Chancalay without success, went into the break trailing despite having been the more prominent side with the ball.
The second half opened with Atlanta pressing again through Almirón, but the home side found its reward in the 57th minute: Anthony Markanich headed home from point blank range off a cross that followed a set piece delivery, leveling the score at 1-1 in a goal that needed a VAR review before being confirmed. It came just seconds after Morris Duggan had rattled the crossbar, in one of the most intense sequences of the match.
With the score tied at 1-1, the game opened up as both sides pushed for a second goal. Atlanta found it in the 77th minute: Tristan Muyumba finished with his left foot from the center of the box, assisted by Aleksey Miranchuk, to make it 1-2, which proved to be the final score. Minnesota created chances late on, with shots from Kelvin Yeboah, Markanich and Mauricio González either saved or narrowly missing the target, but the equalizer never came.
The numbers behind the match
Minnesota was the superior side in possession and attacking volume, a fact reflected both in the official stats and in the xG calculated after the match, which credits the home side with 2.69 expected goals against 0.86 for Atlanta, based on an in house calculation using shot locations. Even so, Atlanta's efficiency in front of goal proved decisive.
| Statistic | Minnesota United FC | Atlanta United |
|---|---|---|
| Possession (%) | 53.3 | 46.7 |
| Shots | 13 | 10 |
| Shots on target | 4 | 3 |
| Big chances | 5 | 2 |
| Corners | 6 | 4 |
| Passes | 472 | 421 |
| Fouls committed | 13 | 13 |
What the preview said versus what happened
The projection published ahead of the match gave Minnesota a 49% chance of winning, compared to 19% for Atlanta and 32% for a draw, with expected goals of 1.34 for the home side and 0.74 for the visitors. The result ended up defying that forecast: despite controlling possession and creating more chances, Minnesota fell to an Atlanta side that was more clinical in the key moments of the match.
What the result means
Atlanta United picks up a win that, per the Eastern Conference standings, keeps the club in 15th place with 18 points from 20 games played, the product of 5 wins, 3 draws and 12 losses this season. Minnesota, meanwhile, will have to digest a painful defeat despite being the better side in several aspects of the game, a pattern that in MLS can weigh just as heavily as the final score itself.
