Atlanta United tops Sporting Kansas City behind goals from Jacob and Picault
Defender Tomás Jacob and Fafà Picault scored in the first half to lift the hosts at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

It took Tomás Jacob just 12 minutes to break the deadlock in a match Atlanta United needed to win by any means necessary. The defender poked home a close-range finish, set up by Miguel Almirón, and lit up Mercedes-Benz Stadium. Eleven minutes later, Fafà Picault tapped in a second off a corner delivered by Elías Báez, and what looked like a comfortable rout turned into a tense night: Sporting Kansas City pulled one back through Stephen Afrifa in the 69th minute and pushed hard until the final whistle. The score finished 2-1, and with it Atlanta pocketed all three points in MLS.
The hosts came out with a clear plan and found an early reward. In the 4th minute, Aleksey Miranchuk had already given a warning with a shot that was blocked, and the opener arrived through a combination between Almirón and Jacob that left the defender alone to finish from close range. The second goal followed the same script Atlanta had been running down the flanks all night: Báez whipped in the corner and Picault tapped it home by the left post. Kansas City had its own moments in that first half, a shot from Taylor Calheira that grazed the crossbar and another from Calvin Harris that clipped the woodwork, but went into the break down on the scoreboard.
In the second half, Kansas City turned to the bench for a spark: Jayden Reid, Stephen Afrifa and Justin Reynolds all came on, and the move paid off almost immediately. Afrifa pulled one back in the 69th minute with a low, angled finish from inside the box that snuck in at the far post. From there, the match got scrappier: yellow cards for Luke Brennan and Elías Báez, an injury that forced Brennan off the field, and Kansas City kept pressing with corners, six in total, without finding the equalizer. Atlanta held on, with Lucas Hoyos securing the lead until the final whistle.
What the numbers say
Territorial control was fairly even, but Atlanta was sharper where it counted: the hosts put three shots on target to the visitors' one, and created two big chances to Kansas City's one. The visitors, for their part, held more of the ball and won more corners.
| Stat | Atlanta United | Sporting Kansas City |
|---|---|---|
| Possession (%) | 48.7 | 51.3 |
| Shots | 8 | 8 |
| Shots on target | 3 | 1 |
| Big chances | 2 | 1 |
| Corners | 2 | 6 |
| Passes | 521 | 527 |
| Fouls committed | 8 | 13 |
By our estimate, calculated from the match's shots, Atlanta generated 1.96 expected goals against Kansas City's 1.33, a gap that backs up the final result even if the scoreline ended up tighter than those numbers suggest.
What the numbers projected before kickoff
The pre-match model gave Atlanta a 56% chance of winning, against 20% for Kansas City and 24% for a draw, with expected goals of 1.99 for the hosts and 1.13 for the visitors. The final result lined up with that forecast: Atlanta won, though Afrifa's goal added more late tension than those figures anticipated.
With the win, Atlanta United keeps stacking points in a competition where the club sits 12th in the Eastern Conference with 21 points from 21 matches played, the product of six wins, three draws and twelve losses. Kansas City, meanwhile, comes away empty-handed despite generating more volume in corners and possession. The efficiency of Jacob and Picault in the first half ended up outweighing the visitors' late push.
