Atlante and Toluca share the points in a fair 0-0 draw at Banorte

Atlante and Toluca played to a 0-0 draw at Estadio Banorte, a result that left mixed feelings: there were plenty of chances to break the deadlock, but neither Luis Calzadilla nor Federico Viñas, the busiest threats in each box, could find a way past the opposing goalkeeper. The draw comes in Liga MX play and keeps both sides fighting in the upper-middle of the table.

A back-and-forth battle with nothing to show for it

The match opened with intensity and early fouls on both sides, but it was Atlante that created the first sparks of danger through Luis Calzadilla, who was involved in several attempts from outside the box. Toluca answered through Federico Viñas, who tested his luck twice inside the area in the first 20 minutes without success. The home side had its best moment near the end of the first half: in the 34th minute Calzadilla struck a left-footed effort that the visiting goalkeeper turned away with a save right under the crossbar, while minutes earlier, in the 29th minute, Viñas had also tested the home defense with a shot from the center of the box. The first half ended scoreless despite the back-and-forth action.

In the second half, the pattern continued: Toluca pushed forward with Diego Barbosa and Jesús Angulo, the latter coming on early in a substitution for Helinho and Pável Pérez aimed at freshening up the attack. Atlante, for its part, found new attacking options in Martín Sarrafiore and Jhojan Julio after Sarrafiore entered in the 52nd minute. Both sides tested the opposing keeper down the stretch: in the 84th minute Sarrafiore fired from close range and Brian García answered on the other end with a shot that flew over the bar. Deep into stoppage time, Joaquín Moxica and Jhojan Julio had the last two clear chances for the home side, but the ball would not go in and the scoreboard stayed at zero.

The numbers behind the draw

The stats reflect a match that was even in terms of chances, though with different nuances in possession and finishing.

Atlante was sharper in front of goal despite seeing less of the ball: it produced 14 shots to its rival's 11 and put five of them on target, nearly triple Toluca's total. According to our after-the-fact xG estimate based on shot location, Toluca generated 1.199 expected goals to the home side's 1.039, a minimal difference that confirms how tight the match was, though the numbers make clear that neither team did enough to walk away with all three points convincingly.

What the preview said versus what happened on the field

Before kickoff, our projection gave Toluca a 48% chance of winning, against 27% for Atlante and 25% for a draw, with an expected goals forecast of 1.34 for the home side and 1.84 for the visitors. The result ended up partly proving out the least likely scenario: neither the visitors' status as favorites nor their expected goal advantage translated into a win, and the draw, the least favored outcome on paper, is exactly what played out on the field.

What the result means in the standings

With this point, Toluca reaches 7 points in its Liga MX record, the product of two wins, one draw and one loss in four matches played, and sits in third place. Atlante, for its part, has 5 points with a record of one win, two draws and one loss in its four outings, placing it in tenth. The gap between the two sides in the standings is just 2 points, a sign of how even the start of the season has been for both clubs, something tonight's match only confirmed out on the pitch.
