Atlas and Atlante Split the Points in a Match Marked by VAR and a Missed Penalty
Luís Esteves put Atlas ahead with a stunning strike, but Sarrafiore leveled things in the second half after Atlante missed a penalty.

Only six minutes had gone by at Estadio Jalisco when Luís Esteves remembered that goals can come from distance too: he took the ball outside the box, set himself up with his right foot and curled it into the top corner. 1-0 for Atlas and a dream start. The match, though, ended the way so many meetings between Atlas and Atlante in Liga MX tend to end: level, 1-1, with more drama than the final score suggests.
Because plenty happened between the first goal and the second. In the 30th minute, Manuel Capasso touched the ball with his hand inside the box and the referee waved play on at the time; a minute later, in the 31st, the VAR decision came through and a penalty was awarded to Atlante. Jhojan Julio stepped up to take it but sent his shot to the goalkeeper's right without much trouble for him: penalty missed, and Atlas went into the break with their slim lead intact.
The relief didn't last long. Right at the start of the second half, in the 47th minute, Martín Sarrafiore popped up in the middle of the box and finished with his left foot to make it 1-1. Three minutes later, in the 50th, another VAR moment, this time to wave off a possible penalty for Atlante. The score wouldn't change for the rest of the match, though chances kept coming: Florián Monzón crashed a shot off the crossbar in the 64th minute, and both Manuel Capasso and Paulo Ramírez had late attempts that missed the target.
Dominance That Wasn't Enough
The numbers back up what was seen on the field: Atlas controlled the ball for nearly the entire match and generated considerably more attacking volume, but couldn't turn that into a decisive edge.
| Stat | Atlas | Atlante |
|---|---|---|
| Possession (%) | 63.5 | 36.5 |
| Shots | 16 | 8 |
| Shots on target | 3 | 2 |
| Big chances | 1 | 1 |
| Corners | 3 | 1 |
| Passes | 521 | 304 |
| Fouls committed | 19 | 16 |
Factoring in those shots, our own xG estimate for the match (a proprietary calculation based on where the shots came from, not an official figure) gives Atlante 1.717 against 1.086 for Atlas. In other words, despite having less of the ball and fewer total shots, Atlante created more dangerous chances, which lines up with the penalty they won and with the second-half chances from Sarrafiore and Eugenio Pizzuto.
That figure contrasts with what we had projected before kickoff: our model gave Atlas a 42% chance of winning, 30% for a draw and 28% for Atlante, with expected goals of 1.35 for the home side and 1.07 for the visitors. The draw is exactly what happened, but the way danger was actually distributed on the field looked more like an even match than the edge the forecast gave the home team.
What the Result Means in the Standings
In the Liga MX table, Atlas came into this match with 13 points from 7 games (4 wins, 1 draw and 2 losses), while Atlante had 7 points also from 7 matches, with 1 win, 4 draws and 2 losses. The gap between the two sides stood at 6 points before this draw, which leaves both teams adding one more point apiece, with neither landing the blow it was looking for.
In the end, the summary is simple: a long-range golazo, a missed penalty that could have changed everything, two VAR reviews and a draw that, given how the chances were shared out, feels about right for both sides.
