Atlas and Pumas UNAM Draw 1-1 at the Jalisco Despite Dominance and Rival's Red Card

The post denied Edgar Zaldivar the winning goal in almost the final play of the match, and the 1-1 between Atlas and Pumas UNAM at Estadio Jalisco ended up reflecting the flow of the game fairly well: a level result, but with the home side pushing far harder than the scoreline suggests.

Pumas UNAM struck first. In the 22nd minute, off a corner kick, Pedro Vite whipped in a cross that Angel Azuaje met with his left foot from the center of the box to make it 0-1. With the score level, Atlas continued to carry the initiative. Jorge Sanchez, Florian Monzon and Gaddi Aguirre all tried their luck without success, while Pumas UNAM looked for answers through Cesar Huerta and Uriel Antuna after substitutions. Things got tougher for the visitors in the 86th minute, when Adalberto Carrasquilla, who had just come on, was shown a straight red card. Down a man, Pumas held on through the closing stages, including a lengthy seven minutes of second-half stoppage time, during which Zaldivar crashed a shot off the right post following an assist from Ryan Mmaee. That was the last real scare in a match that finished 1-1.

The numbers back up the sense of Atlas dominance, as the home side was ahead in the main attacking metrics without being able to turn it into more goals.

Twice as many shots and three times as many big chances explain why, according to our estimate calculated from the match's shot data, Atlas generated 3.137 expected goals compared to just 1.048 for Pumas UNAM. It's a wide gap that confirms the home side deserved more than a draw, even though the final score ended up level.

What this match leaves behind is the feeling of a missed opportunity for Atlas, who fired off twenty shots, created three big chances and finished the game with a numerical advantage, yet couldn't find the second goal that would have delivered all three points.
