Atlético Beats Málaga, But All the Talk Is About Julián Álvarez's Future
The forward was left out of the squad for the league opener, and fans turned on him with banners and insults.
He didn't play, didn't even make the bench, didn't show up on screen at all. And yet Atlético Madrid's entire league opener ended up revolving around him. Diego Simeone's side beat Málaga 2-0 on the opening weekend of LaLiga, but what's being talked about in Madrid isn't the goals. It's the absence, and the uncertain future, of Julián Álvarez.
The forward from Córdoba, who arrived at the club as one of its biggest bets in recent years, has let it be known that he wants to join Barcelona. And at a club like Atlético, that's not easily forgiven. Tension was already building before kickoff at the Metropolitano, when a group of fans hung a banner outside the stadium with a blunt, unfiltered message.
"Julián, 'thanks' for the respect you're showing us, you idiot. Barça and your inner circle have played you like a spoiled kid because you wouldn't act like a man. Now it's time to get to work. Our Atleti comes before everything," the banner read. That wasn't the only sign of rejection. Inside the stadium, during the match, even harsher chants targeted the former River Plate man, even though he wasn't even called up for the opener.
How does a coach handle something like that? Asked in his post-match press conference about the abuse directed at his player, Simeone chose a short, almost calculated line:
"Very respectful toward our fans."Diego Simeone
Far from cooling things down, the response sounded more like an endorsement of the crowd's anger than a defense of Julián Álvarez. And it wasn't an isolated remark: hours before the match, Simeone had already addressed the matter, echoing comments made by club president Enrique Cerezo, who had publicly spoken about the forward's situation in terms that left little room for ambiguity.
The club's stance, in the Cholo's words
Simeone was even more explicit in laying out the institutional thinking:
"If the owner of the club speaks as bluntly as he did, there's nothing more to say. It's like in court, case closed. What he expressed is more than clear, and from there we act on the sporting side, trying to look after the person and the player, and hoping he's in the condition we believe he needs to be in so he keeps protecting the name he has, the player he is, and everything he's given us."Diego Simeone
That reference to "physical condition" isn't trivial: Julián Álvarez has barely a week of preseason training under his belt, which in principle would explain, at least from a sporting standpoint, why he wasn't included against Málaga. But in a transfer window where rumors linking him to Barcelona won't go away, any absence gets read through a different lens.
The result, a 2-0 win and three points to open the LaLiga campaign, faded into the background. Atlético's real test, at least over the coming weeks, won't be decided on the field. It'll be settled in boardrooms, in the relationship with a forward who a year ago was considered untouchable and today is, for a large part of the club's own fan base, a source of resentment.
