Atlético Madrid confirms signing of Cristian Romero from Tottenham for 34 million pounds

Atlético Madrid has landed a heavyweight reinforcement for its defense. The club confirmed the signing of Cristian "Cuti" Romero from Tottenham, in a transfer worth close to 34 million pounds (roughly $46 million). It's a considerable outlay that shows just how badly Diego Simeone wanted to lock down experience and authority at the heart of his back line.

The Argentine defender, 28, signed a five-year contract that binds him to the Rojiblancos through June 2031. It's a long-term commitment for a player arriving at a moment when his name carries plenty of weight both on and off the field: Romero was an undisputed starter for the Argentina side that lifted the World Cup in Qatar 2022, and he was also part of the squad in the more recent final loss to Spain. In total, he has now made 58 appearances for the Albiceleste.

His departure from England is no small matter. Romero was Tottenham's captain last season and played 32 matches, racking up 156 appearances in the Spurs shirt since arriving in 2021. He first joined on loan from Atalanta, and a year later the London club made the move permanent. Now, after four years, the defender closes that chapter to begin a new one in Spain.

A profile that fits Simeone's style

Atlético highlighted the Argentine's physical and competitive profile. The club described him as "an experienced defender, very physical, quick to read danger and decisive in one-on-one duels, with considerable authority and leadership on the field." It's a description that seems tailor-made for what Simeone has historically demanded from his defensive line: solidity, commitment and the personality to take charge at the back.

Before settling in English football, Romero had already made stops at several European clubs. He played for Genoa and Juventus after leaving Belgrano, the club from his hometown, in 2018. That path, along with his time at Atalanta, helped shape a center back who now arrives in Madrid with a World Cup winner's resume and a leadership pedigree that few defenders of his generation can match.

For Atlético, Romero's arrival represents a clear statement of intent: strengthening an area of the squad that needed names of international pedigree. It remains to be seen how he'll adapt to the Rojiblanco system, but the competitive edge he brings from England and his track record with the Argentine national team are, from the outset, credentials that are hard to overlook.
