Atlético Hold On with Ten Men to Draw at Stuttgart, Stay on 4 Points in Champions League

Julián Álvarez leveled right at the start of the second half and Atlético held on a man down after Hjulmand's red card to seal a 1-1 draw against VfB Stuttgart in the Champions League.

Atlético Hold On with Ten Men to Draw at Stuttgart, Stay on 4 Points in Champions League

Barely a minute into the second half, still trailing on the scoreboard, Atlético Madrid found the equalizer: Julián Álvarez, in the 46th minute, curled a left-footed finish into the corner off an assist from Ademola Lookman, who had just come on at halftime for Jonathan David. The 1-1 at the MHPArena left a bittersweet taste for an Atlético side that finished with a man down and that, across the 90 minutes of this Champions League league-phase matchday, couldn't make the most of a late stretch after spending almost the entire first half behind on the scoreboard against VfB Stuttgart.

In truth, the match turned on two very specific minutes. Stuttgart had been the sharper side from the start, with Bilal El Khannouss and Josha Vagnoman testing Jan Oblak in the opening minutes, and that pressure paid off in the 35th minute: Jamie Leweling let fly with a left-footed strike from outside the box that snuck in low, hugging the left post, for the 1-0. Atlético, who had answered with attempts from Marc Pubill, Julián Álvarez and Dávid Hancko (the latter with a header that sailed over in the 42nd minute), went into the break behind on the scoreboard despite creating chances of their own.

The response didn't take long. With Lookman swapped in for David at the break, Atlético came out with a different energy, and in the very first minute of the second half, Álvarez's equalizer arrived. From there the game seemed to open up, but in the 63rd minute things got complicated for the visitors: Morten Hjulmand was shown a red card, and Atlético had to manage more than half an hour with a man disadvantage. Even down a player, Diego Simeone's side held firm against Stuttgart's pushes under coach Sebastian Hoeneß, who brought on Ermedin Demirovic, Lorenz Assignon and Dzenan Pejcinovic in search of a second goal all the way to the final whistle, including a stoppage-time effort from Grischa Prömel that Oblak tipped behind for a corner.

What the numbers say

Stuttgart had the edge in possession and generated more overall volume, something reflected in the match statistics:

StatisticVfB StuttgartAtlético de Madrid
Possession (%)54.145.9
Shots1810
Shots on target53
Corners94
Passes512458
Fouls committed157

According to our post-match estimate calculated from the shots taken in the game, Stuttgart generated 1.597 expected goals against Atlético's 0.688, a gap that confirms the home side's greater control of the game, even though the result ended up being shared.

The draw runs somewhat counter to our pre-match projections, which gave Atlético Madrid a 39% chance of winning against 34% for Stuttgart and 27% for a draw, with combined expected goals of 3.1 (1.61 for the visitors and 1.5 for the home side). The final result fell short of that goal projection, and the split of points ended up being the least favored outcome in the pre-match forecast.

What it means in the standings

With this draw, VfB Stuttgart moves to 7 points from 3 matches played (2 wins, 1 draw, 0 losses), sitting in third place in the competition. Atlético Madrid, for its part, stays on 4 points from 3 matches (1 win, 1 draw, 1 loss), in 15th place, 3 points behind today's opponent. Neither side left fully satisfied: Stuttgart let slip a lead that had seemed under control, while Atlético had to grind through more than half an hour down a man to avoid dropping points on a road trip that at one stage had both the scoreboard and the numerical advantage working against it.
