Atlético Madrid land Jonathan David on loan from Juventus with option to buy

Four hours before the transfer window closed, Atlético Madrid pulled a rabbit out of the hat. The red and white club announced the signing of Canadian forward Jonathan David, on loan from Juventus through the end of the season, with a purchase option set at 25 million euros. Just when it seemed like the summer had run out of surprises, this one showed up.

Juventus itself confirmed the terms of the deal in a statement, making clear this is no ordinary loan without further consequences: "The agreement also includes the right for Atlético Madrid to acquire the player's registration rights on a permanent basis. The agreed consideration for the possible definitive transfer is 25 million euros, payable over four financial years." In other words, Juventus has secured an orderly exit for a signing that, so far, hasn't panned out the way it hoped.

That's the curious part of this story. Atlético isn't discovering David now. The club already had him on its radar a while back, when the Canadian was shining at Lille. Between 2020 and 2025 he put together five seasons of the highest level: 13 goals, then 19, then 26, then 26 again, and 25 in his final French campaign, for a total of 109 goals in 232 matches. With those numbers, he helped Lille win Ligue 1 in 2020-21, the last time PSG went without the domestic title.

Then came the move to Italy. Signed as a free agent in July 2025, his first season at Juventus has been, by the numbers, the weakest of his recent career: eight goals in 47 matches and 2,385 minutes, a rate of one goal every 298 minutes. Far from the efficiency he showed in France. Atlético is essentially betting that the dip is circumstantial rather than structural.

Another option up front

In presenting the signing, the Madrid club described him this way: "He typically plays as a center forward, though his profile goes well beyond his ability to finish plays. Jonathan David stands out for his mobility, his ability to combine with teammates and his versatility in the attacking third." He doesn't arrive to displace anyone, but to add options: Julián Álvarez remains the fixture up front, Alexander Sorloth is recovering from a muscle injury and is expected back soon, and out wide or in the number 10 role there's also Ademola Lookman, Álex Baena and Arnau Ortiz.

David, 26, is Atlético's fifth signing of this summer transfer window, following Cristian Romero, Alejandro Grimaldo, Morten Hjulmand and Kang in Lee. In fact, all but the Argentine defender have already made their debuts this season, in which the team has played three matches with two wins and a draw.

His personal story has plenty of ground covered too: born in Brooklyn, New York, he spent his childhood in Haiti until age six and developed as a player in Ottawa, Canada, before Gent signed him in 2018. There he played 83 matches and scored 37 goals, numbers that opened the door to a 27 million euro move to Lille. Today he is Canada's all time leading scorer, with 42 goals in 82 appearances for the national team, a résumé that explains why Atlético decided not to let him slip away again.
