Atlético Nacional builds a star-studded midfield with James Rodríguez, Cardona and Rengifo

Three players used to touching the ball before looking for space to run into. That's what Atlético Nacional now has in midfield, and it's why people in Antioquia are already talking about a luxury that not every club on the continent can afford: James Rodríguez, Edwin Cardona and Juan Rengifo sharing minutes, ideas and space in the same area of the field.

The arrival of the Colombian national team captain wasn't just another signing. Nacional brought him in to shake up Colombian soccer, sure, but also to strengthen something the club had already built at home: the partnership between Cardona, with his experience and eye for goal, and Rengifo, the young prospect who has steadily gained prominence over recent seasons. Three players who read the game in similar ways, all with technique ahead of physicality, all comfortable with the ball at their feet.

The question circulating in Medellín is simple: is there enough room on the field for all three at once? Coach Lucas González has already offered a hint of how he plans to handle that high-class problem.

That statement wasn't a coincidence. With it, the coach explained why he had prioritized Cardona in the starting lineup in recent weeks, while giving Rengifo minutes here and there, though without the leading role he had in previous seasons. That conversation also includes Marlos Moreno, who's in good form right now, and Andrés Sarmiento, who has responded well every time he's been called off the bench.

Rotation as strategy

González was clear about how he intends to manage this midfield loaded with talent.

But there's an image that's already stirring excitement among the green and white faithful: James as an attacking midfielder, free to combine with teammates; Cardona and Rengifo drifting wide with constant movement; and Alfredo Morelos up top as the focal point. A combination-based front three that, if it clicks, would give Nacional a different identity from the one it has shown in recent months.

Putting that piece together isn't a one game or two game job. Lucas González knows that. With three matches remaining in the league, his team sits fifth in the Colombian first division standings, eight points behind leader América de Cali. The tactical plan is becoming clearer by the week, and James's arrival could be the push needed to speed that process along.

The ultimate goal is no secret to anyone in Medellín: fight for titles and return to the Copa Libertadores. With this midfield, at least, there's no shortage of material to work with.
