Atlético San Luis holds off Querétaro rally, wins 2-1 in Liga MX
A goal from Felipe Mora and an own goal by Daniel Parra put Atlético San Luis ahead, and the team held off a penalty strike from Alí Ávila to take all three points.

The final score read 2-1 in favor of Atlético San Luis, but the game was really decided in one specific stretch of the second half: between the 51st and 66th minutes, the home side turned a scoreless first half into a two-goal cushion that, despite a late scare, proved enough to secure all three points in Liga MX.
The first half was back and forth without a payoff. Sébastien Salles-Lamonge and Anderson Duarte each tried their luck from outside the box without finding the target, and right before the break VAR reviewed a possible penalty for Atlético San Luis that was ultimately waved off. The teams went into halftime locked at 0-0, a scoreline that didn't fully reflect the home side's control of the match, built on more possession and more forays into the opposing box.
The stretch that changed everything
The game opened up as soon as the second half got underway. In the 51st minute, Felipe Mora finished with his left foot from close range, into the right side of the net, after a headed assist from Rafa Llorente, making it 1-0. Fifteen minutes later, in the 66th, came the blow that looked to settle the match: on a Querétaro attacking sequence inside the box, the ball ended up in the home goal off Daniel Parra, making it 2-0.
Querétaro, though, didn't fold. In the 71st minute, a penalty committed by Benjamín Galdames on Denilson Muñoz gave the visitors a chance to get back into it, and Alí Ávila made no mistake from the spot in the 73rd minute to make it 2-1. That's where it stayed: Atlético San Luis weathered the closing minutes, which included six added minutes in the second half, and walked away with all three points.
By the numbers
The home side's control showed up in the stats: more possession, more shots and more corners in their favor, though shots on target ended up even between the two sides.
| Stat | Atlético San Luis | Querétaro |
|---|---|---|
| Possession (%) | 55.2 | 44.8 |
| Shots | 12 | 9 |
| Shots on target | 4 | 4 |
| Corners | 5 | 2 |
| Passes | 585 | 468 |
| Fouls committed | 9 | 7 |
In terms of xG generated during the match itself (our own estimate based on shot locations, not a pre-match prediction), Atlético San Luis racked up 1.603 against Querétaro's 1.371, a gap that lines up with just how tight the final score turned out to be despite the two-goal cushion the home side once held.
Our pre-match preview gave Atlético San Luis a 43% chance of winning, against 28% for Querétaro and 29% for a draw, with expected goals of 1.52 for the home side and 1.19 for the visitors, a combined 2.70. What actually unfolded wasn't too far off that script: the favorite won, in a low-scoring game just above that projected 2.70 total, though the path there, an own goal and a penalty, was far messier than any projection could have anticipated.
What the result means in the standings
In the Liga MX table, Querétaro stays in seventh place with 20 points from 13 games played (6 wins, 2 draws, 4 losses), while Atlético San Luis sits 13th with 16 points from the same 13 games (4 wins, 4 draws, 5 losses). The gap between the two sides before this match stood at 4 points, and the home win helps close the distance to the middle of the table, though Atlético San Luis's still-negative goal difference is a reminder that the team's form at home remains far sturdier than it is on the road.
For Querétaro, the setback stings more because of how it unfolded: the match looked all but lost at 2-0, and Alí Ávila's penalty brought it back to life, but it wasn't enough to find anything on a night when the road was anything but kind.
