Aubameyang to undergo surgery for meniscus injury in right knee

Bad news for Deportivo. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang will undergo surgery tomorrow, Thursday, to address discomfort in the lateral meniscus of his right knee, the Coruna club confirmed this Wednesday.

The Gabonese forward had been carrying the discomfort since Deportivo's last LaLiga match against Real Betis at Riazor, the game in which the injury occurred. What at first seemed like a simple knock or a case of overload turned out to be more serious: imaging tests carried out in recent hours revealed the extent of the injury and led to the decision to operate.

Aubameyang is, by a wide margin, the team's main attacking threat this season. With five goals, he is Deportivo's top scorer, so his absence is no small setback for a squad that needs every goal it can find.

Surgery in Madrid, then back to A Coruna

The procedure will be carried out by orthopedic surgeon Manuel Leyes at the Centro Olympia in Madrid. The club's plan is for the striker to be discharged from the hospital later that same Thursday and return to A Coruna as soon as possible to begin his recovery at the team's usual facilities.

There is no fixed recovery timeline for now. Deportivo have made clear that Aubameyang's own progress will set the pace for everything: how the knee responds in the first few days will determine when he can get back on the training pitch with his teammates and, further down the line, when he will be fit to compete again.

In the meantime, the club will have to find answers up front without its top scorer, at a point in the season when every point matters. Deportivo fans will need to be patient and wait for updates on the recovery of a player who, with his five goals, had become a key piece of the attack.
