Austin FC and Colorado Rapids play out late 1-1 draw in Texas

Austin FC had to work until the final whistle to avoid defeat at home. At Q2 Stadium, the Texas side settled for a 1-1 draw against the Colorado Rapids in an MLS clash that got away from them early and that they only managed to level in the closing stretch thanks to a header from Facundo Torres.

Colorado struck first. In the 21st minute, after an initial shot from Darren Yapi was blocked, Paxten Aaronson pounced on the rebound and rifled a shot from outside the box that snuck in right by the left post of Brad Stuver. The 0-1 arrived at a point when the Rapids had already given warning signs with attempts from Youssef Maziz and Yapi himself, and it left Austin fighting an uphill battle on its own turf.

The home side created chances throughout the first half, an early shot from Facundo Torres that went wide, another from Brandon Vazquez that missed the target, but struggled to turn that dominance into a goal. The equalizer didn't come until the second half, in the 78th minute: Zan Kolmanic, who had come on from the bench, whipped in a cross and Facundo Torres rose in the middle to head it low, just inside the left post, to make it a final 1-1.

Between the two goals there was plenty of everything except goals: shots from Josh Atencio, Christian Ramirez (who had come on for Vazquez), Miguel Navarro, and even an attempt from Przemyslaw Placheta in the closing minutes that missed the target. The match also featured two hydration breaks and a constant back and forth of corner kicks (eight for Austin, four for Colorado) that reflected just how even the contest was.

What the numbers say

The stats confirm how even the result was, though with some nuance. Austin had more clear looks at goal, but Colorado was more clinical in front of the net.

Based on our xG estimate calculated from the shots taken in the match, Austin generated 1.385 expected goals against 0.597 for Colorado, a gap that backs up the home side's territorial dominance despite putting just two shots on target.

Ahead of the match, we had projected a 39% chance of an Austin win, a 30% chance of a draw and a 31% chance for Colorado, with expected goals of 1.35 for the home side and 1.17 for the visitors. The final result, a draw with a goal for each side, ended up matching that spread of outcomes fairly well.

What the result means

For Austin FC, which came into this match in the lower half of the Western Conference table, the point is useful for the standings but doesn't fix the underlying issue: its goal difference remains the worst among the teams in the lower-middle of the table. Colorado Rapids, for its part, sits six points behind Austin in the standings, but also couldn't hold on to the advantage it had earned with Aaronson's goal. Neither side was able to close out the match with a win that, judging by the chances created, was within reach for both.
