Ayyoub Bouaddi, Morocco's World Cup Breakout Star, Set for $115.7 Million Move to Manchester City
The 18-year-old Lille midfielder arrives as Rodri's replacement in a total overhaul of Maresca's midfield.

A hundred million euros for an 18-year-old who just a few months ago was still just another promising talent in French soccer. That's how fast everything can change once a World Cup puts you on the map. Ayyoub Bouaddi, Morocco's breakout star at the 2026 World Cup, is on the verge of becoming a Manchester City player, according to a report from ESPN.
The Lille midfielder would sign a five year deal, with the transfer fee reaching 100 million euros ($115.7 million), the figure the French club had set as its bottom line for letting him go. Personal terms are already in place. What's left to sort out, expected to be finalized this week, are the bonuses and payment structure between the two clubs.
Behind the deal is a key figure: Hugo Viana, City's sporting director, who has spent weeks in direct contact with Olivier Letang, Lille's president. The negotiation, though, hinged on another piece of the puzzle. City first needed to finalize Rodri's move to Barcelona, a deal worth 76.5 million euros, in order to free up funds for the Bouaddi signing. With that sale now in motion, the path was clear.
It's worth understanding why so many clubs are fighting over a player who, just a year ago, was practically unknown outside France. Bouaddi was a key piece for the Morocco side that reached the World Cup quarterfinals, falling to France, and along the way became the youngest African player to feature in five matches at a single edition of the World Cup. That tournament alone was enough to catch the attention of Arsenal, PSG, Bayern Munich and Real Madrid. City got there first.
A midfield being rebuilt from scratch
Bouaddi's arrival isn't an isolated signing. It fits into a deep rebuild of City's midfield under Enzo Maresca. Beyond Rodri's departure, the club is also closing in on the sale of Tijjani Reijnders to Al Qadsiah, while it has already added Elliot Anderson, signed for 135 million euros from Nottingham Forest. And the list may not stop there: Maresca is still pursuing Enzo Fernandez, though Chelsea issued an ultimatum on Friday for anyone willing to pay the 120 million pounds ($161.8 million) it wants for the Argentine, a deadline that has already passed without an offer at that level.
All of this comes at an awkward moment for City, who fell 3-0 to Arsenal in the Community Shield last Sunday. The Premier League season kicks off on August 23, when City host Bournemouth, and by then Maresca could already have much of his new midfield on the field, a unit that is being reshaped almost entirely in a single summer.
