Balogun to Everton and Ndiaye to Manchester City Cap Frantic Deadline Day in the Premier League
City spends 60 million pounds on the Everton winger while Grealish returns to the same club on loan.
There are only minutes left before the market closes, and sporting directors' phones across Europe won't stop ringing. This Tuesday is deadline day in the five major leagues, and as usual, everything is coming down to the final hours before the window shuts.
The name on everyone's lips is Folarin Balogun. The American forward is close to finalizing his departure from Monaco to join Everton, according to reports circulating on the deal. It would be one of the most talked about moves of the day, in a market that has already been eye catching in England given the sums being thrown around.
And speaking of sums, Manchester City shows no sign of slowing down. After a spending window that was already notable, Pep Guardiola's club is close to adding winger Iliman Ndiaye, who would arrive from Everton itself for a fee close to 60 million pounds (around $81 million). With this move, City is making clear it has no intention of waiting until next summer to reinforce Guardiola's attack.
The other name that has been on everyone's tongue for much of the window is Enzo Fernandez. The Chelsea midfielder was persistently linked as a possible target for the Etihad Stadium, though time is running out and the chances of that transfer being completed before the deadline are shrinking with each passing hour.
While some arrive, others are packing their bags. Jack Grealish, who was already sent out on loan last season, looks set to repeat the arrangement: everything points to him returning to Everton on loan for another season. For the Englishman, finding playing time away from City has become almost a necessity after losing his place in Guardiola's starting lineup.
A Market Nearing the Record
The numbers put all of this last minute madness into context. The Premier League has racked up spending of 2,820 million pounds (around $3,800 million) so far, a figure that leaves it on the verge of breaking the all time record. The current ceiling was set by the Premier League itself in 2025, with 3,140 million pounds ($4,250 million) invested in a single window.
Closing times are not the same across the continent. The window in England closes at 22:00 GMT, while in Germany, France and Italy the deadline comes earlier, at 18:00 GMT. In Spain, the market stays open until 21:59 GMT, closing almost in parallel with England.
With several fronts open at once, it stands to reason that the coming hours will bring more than one surprise. That's the nature of deadline day: nothing is signed until it truly is.
