Banfield dominates, misses its chances, and Rosario Central salvages a late draw

Despite an xG of 2.69 to 0.93 and 21 shots, Banfield couldn't hold onto its lead as Rosario Central equalized with a stunning strike from Cantizano in the 79th minute.

Banfield dominates, misses its chances, and Rosario Central salvages a late draw

Banfield had everything in place to walk away with all three points at the Florencio Solá. The home side dominated through sheer individual quality, took the lead on the scoreboard, and then watched Rosario Central draw level with nine minutes left on a shot from outside the box. The final score read 1-1, and given how the match unfolded, it leaves a bitter taste for the home team.

The first half belonged to Tomás Adoryán. Banfield's forward kept testing his luck over and over (in the 8th, 9th, 30th, and 32nd minutes) until he finally broke through in the 40th minute: a right-footed strike from outside the box, low and inside the left post, assisted by David Zalazar. The 1-0 scoreline was a fair reflection of the first half, with Banfield far more incisive despite seeing less of the ball.

In the second half, Banfield continued to deserve more. Adrián Balboa rattled the crossbar in the 57th minute off a counterattack, and between the 60th and 65th minutes both Banfield and Rosario Central traded chances up front without either side managing to extend the lead or find an early equalizer. Rosario Central, with more possession and patience, gradually found pockets of space outside the box. Ángel Di María tried his luck twice from distance without success, until the goal finally arrived through another route: in the 79th minute, Giovanni Cantizano connected on a right-footed shot from outside the area, low and inside the left post, assisted by Franco Ibarra, for the final 1-1.

A lot more than a draw in the numbers

The stats leave little doubt: Banfield created more, but it wasn't enough. Our expected goals estimate based on the match's shots confirms it: 2.69 xG for Banfield against 0.93 for Rosario Central, a wide gap for a result that ended level on the scoreboard.

Rosario Central moved the ball with ease, completing more than 532 passes to Banfield's 266, but struggled to turn that possession into clear chances, managing just two shots on target all match. Banfield, by contrast, racked up 21 shots and four big chances, though only five of those attempts were genuinely threatening. It's the classic story of a team that keeps knocking but can't find the finish.

Our pre-match projections had Rosario Central as the favorite, with a 45% chance of winning, compared to 23% for Banfield and 32% for a draw, with expected goals of 1.29 for the visitors and 0.85 for the home side. How the game actually played out went largely against that forecast, with Banfield driving the action for most of the match, though by the end the result ended up lining up more closely with the draw that the pre-match numbers had flagged as a real possibility.

What the match means in the standings

In Group B, Rosario Central came into the match with 19 points from 11 games played (5 wins, 4 draws, 2 losses) and stays among the top positions after picking up another point. Banfield, meanwhile, now has 10 points from 11 games (2 wins, 4 draws, 5 losses) and remains stuck near the bottom of the table despite matches like this one, where it created far more than the scoreboard ultimately showed.

With late changes such as Lisandro Piñero and Lautaro Villegas coming on for Banfield, and Marco Ruben and Sebastián Zaracho for Rosario Central, both sides searched for fresh options down the stretch without managing to tip the balance. The match wound down with a handful of cards (Esquivel, Coronel) and a few more fouls, but no further scares on the scoreboard. A point that feels like too little for Banfield given what it produced, and one that lets Rosario Central keep chipping away in the fight for the top of the table.
