Barcelona agrees to sell Ferran Torres to Paris Saint-Germain for $57 million

Just a few days ago, Barcelona said no to an offer of $45 million. Now, with the numbers a bit higher, the club has said yes. Ferran Torres is about to become a player for Paris Saint-Germain, the reigning European champions, in a deal that would land around $57 million.

According to a source consulted by ESPN, the two clubs already have an agreement in principle and the plan is to finalize the transfer in the coming days. The next step, largely a formality but a required one, is Ferran's trip to Paris to undergo a medical exam before putting pen to paper.

Why did Barcelona give in? The story makes sense. The Catalan club wanted to keep Ferran, and had even floated the possibility of renewing and extending his contract. But the Valencia native had just one year left on his deal, and more importantly, he was the one who asked to leave. With those two cards on the table, Barca ultimately agreed to let him go.

Torres arrives in Paris at the best possible moment of his career. It was his goal that gave Spain the win over Argentina in the World Cup final, an image that remains fresh for any fan. Now he reunites with Luis Enrique, the coach who already managed him with the national team and knows him inside and out.

From winger to center forward

The 26-year-old forward began his career as a pure winger, but in recent times he has shifted toward a more central role. At PSG he is expected to fill exactly that spot as the focal point of the attack, the number 9, following the departure of Goncalo Ramos to AC Milan. A Parisian attack that was already one of the most feared in Europe now adds a reliable backup option.

For Barcelona, though, Ferran's departure leaves a hole that's far from minor. Last season he scored 21 goals in Barca colors, and his exit comes on top of that of Robert Lewandowski, who also left the club this summer to sign with the Chicago Fire. In other words, the Spanish champions have lost their go-to center forward in one fell swoop.

The solution that most excites the club's front office remains Julian Alvarez, of Atletico Madrid, though negotiations for the Argentine are proving far from simple. If that deal fails to come together, Barcelona will have to look for alternatives on the market before its forward line planning gets even more complicated.
