Barcelona Scraps Tribute to Its Eight World Champions, Will Hand Out 10,000 Catalan Flags at Camp Nou
The club chose to call off the tribute to Garcia, Pedri, Gavi, Rodri, Olmo, Lamine, Cubarsi and Eric Garcia to avoid stirring up confrontation.
Camp Nou had a different script lined up for this Thursday. Eight World Cup champions with Spain, more than any other club contributed to the Roja's latest title, were set to be honored before the season's first home league match against Athletic Bilbao. In the end, that ceremony is not going to happen.
Barcelona decided to cancel it over an incident that, on the surface, had nothing to do with soccer but ended up landing squarely in the locker room. Last weekend, before the match in Elche, police confiscated a Catalan independence flag, known as an estelada, from a Barcelona fan. The young man confronted the officers, who responded by striking him with batons before arresting him. The footage spread quickly, and the club decided to take a stand.
In a statement, Barcelona expressed regret over the confiscation of the flag and was direct about it: the estelada "is a symbol legally protected, and displaying it constitutes a legitimate exercise of freedom of expression." The club added that the symbol "cannot in itself be considered incitement to hatred or violence" and called the procedure used to detain the fan disproportionate, noting that the use of force lacked proper justification.
What was supposed to be an afternoon of trophies and celebration turned into something else entirely. Instead of the tribute to the champions, a Catalan organization will hand out some 10,000 estelada flags outside Camp Nou before the match. Club president Joan Laporta backed the gesture, calling it a peaceful "act celebrating the estelada" that represents Catalans' right to freedom of expression.
Laporta was the one who explained why the club chose to step back from honoring its World Cup winners:
This isn't the most appropriate moment for the tribute. Soccer should unite people, not create confrontation.Joan Laporta
It's worth putting into context what is being set aside. Other Spanish clubs, working with the federation, had already paid tribute to their own World Cup champions, trophy in hand and with national team coach Luis de la Fuente present. Barcelona has the longest list in all of Spanish soccer: Joan Garcia, Eric Garcia, Pedri, Pau Cubarsi, Gavi, Rodri, Dani Olmo and Lamine Yamal, eight names who were central to the title won last month.
Laporta also made clear that the Spanish federation understood the club's position, so there is no formal rift or sanction on the horizon from the institutional side. What remains is an unusual scene: Camp Nou filled with estelada flags instead of the World Cup trophy, and a tribute that, for now, remains on hold for another day.
