Barcelona demolishes Valencia with 0-5 rout at Mestalla

Lamine Yamal and Fermin Lopez lead the Blaugrana demolition in the opening minutes of a match that was one-way traffic from the start.

Barcelona demolishes Valencia with 0-5 rout at Mestalla

It took Barcelona five minutes to get ahead at Mestalla, and ninety to make clear there would be no way back for the home side. The final score, 0-5, leaves Valencia buried at the bottom of the table and confirms a rout that was already taking shape almost from the opening whistle.

Lamine Yamal opened the scoring in the 5th minute with an angled finish from the right, set up by Fermin Lopez, and two minutes later he nearly made it two: VAR ruled out a second goal after reviewing an offside position. Valencia barely had time to regroup before, in the 21st minute, Fermin Lopez did find the net, this time assisted by Anthony Gordon, making it 0-2 at the break.

The knockout blow after the restart

If Valencia had any hope of a response left, it vanished as soon as the second half began. In the 49th minute, Raphinha finished off a counterattack from close range, with a pass from Fermin Lopez, for 0-3. The match was already a formality, but Barcelona didn't ease up: Pedri extended the lead in the 78th minute with an assist from Dani Olmo, and Lamine Yamal completed the rout in the 83rd minute with another pass from Olmo, a goal that also went through VAR review before it was confirmed.

In between there were flashes from a Valencia side with no real answer: Arnaut Danjuma tried his luck a couple of times in the first half without success, and Rodri crashed a header off the crossbar in the second, the closest thing to a scare Barcelona faced all match.

Numbers that reflect the gap

The match statistics tell a story of total Barcelona control, as the visitors dominated possession and vastly outshot Valencia.

The xG generated in the match, an in-house estimate calculated from the shots taken, backs up that dominance: 4.00 for Barcelona compared to just 0.60 for Valencia. Before the match, our preview projected a visiting win at 68% probability, a draw at 19%, and just 13% for Valencia, with expected goals of 2.46 for Barcelona and 1.02 for Valencia. The result not only confirmed the Blaugrana as favorites, it blew right past those expectations.

What it means in the standings

With this win, Barcelona reaches 12 points through four matches, with a perfect record and a goal difference of 15, sitting atop the LaLiga table. Valencia, meanwhile, are stuck on just 1 point after four matchdays with a goal difference of -8, in last place. The 11-point gap between the two sides in the standings already pointed to a tough afternoon for the home side, and what happened at Mestalla only confirmed it.
