Barcelona hosts Rayo Vallecano, eyeing another home rout

The defending champion arrives off a 5-0 thrashing at Elche and takes on a Rayo side that has managed just one point through two matches, on Monday.

Two wins, zero goals conceded and a 5-0 demolition job at Elche to top it off. With those numbers in tow, Barcelona throws open the gates of Camp Nou to host Rayo Vallecano in LaLiga's third round, and Hansi Flick's plan looks like more of the same: pile on the goals in a start to the season that has, so far, been about as close to perfect as it gets.

The reigning champion isn't content to simply defend the crown, it wants to reassert it right away. That's why the summer transfer window brought in reinforcements built for another leap forward, and why every home match now feels like a showcase. This will only be the second home game of the 2026/2027 campaign, and everything suggests the Barça faithful are hoping for another exhibition.

Standing in the way is a Rayo side sitting near the bottom of the table, hope still intact but facing the reality of a trip to one of Spanish soccer's toughest venues. The Vallecas club opened with a 2-1 loss to Sevilla, then shared the points with Alaves in a 1-1 draw, a result that at least gave them something to build on before this trip to Barcelona.

How the two sides arrive

Barca, for its part, hasn't shown a hint of hesitation. It opened with a 2-0 win over Athletic Club and then delivered that emphatic 5-0 away at Elche, a rout that made clear Flick's side has no plans to ease off despite already having the title locked up. Two games, two wins, and a goal difference that's starting to scare off anyone who crosses their path.

For this match, Barca's likely starting lineup includes names like Lamine Yamal, Raphinha, Pedri and Fermin Lopez, with Joan Garcia between the posts and a back line pairing Eric Garcia, Pau Cubarsi and Gerard Martin. Rayo, meanwhile, is expected to field Augusto Batalla in goal and an attacking line featuring Isi Palazon, Sergio Camello and Jorge de Frutos, pieces of a team that knows how to compete even if it lacks the firepower to match Barca's pace over 90 minutes.

The head-to-head history doesn't offer much hope for the Vallecas faithful either: of the 49 meetings between the two clubs, Barcelona has won 31, there have been eleven draws, and Rayo has only been able to celebrate seven times. Numbers that carry weight, especially given the Catalans' current form.

The match is set for Monday, August 31, kicking off at 1:30 p.m. Mexico City time, 2:30 p.m. in Ecuador, Colombia and Peru, 3:30 p.m. on the US East Coast and in Chile, and 4:30 p.m. in Argentina and Uruguay, with Spotify Camp Nou as the stage. The question looming over Vallecas is simple: will hanging tough be enough, or will Barca add another home rout to the pile?
