Barcelona and Real Madrid Go Head to Head on Third Kits for 2026-27

Barcelona brings back its 90s teal while Madrid goes with a pale pink inspired by Latin American art.

Barcelona and Real Madrid Go Head to Head on Third Kits for 2026-27

Preseason hasn't even started and there's already a Clásico brewing. This week, Barcelona and Real Madrid both rolled out their third kits for 2026-27, and the result is a little battle of styles worth taking a closer look at, even if not a single minute will be played in these shirts just yet.

Let's start with Barça. The club unveiled its new jersey on Tuesday, and there's no mistaking the inspiration: a direct tribute to the 1990s, specifically that teal and turquoise kit the team wore between 1995 and 1997. The zigzags and jagged paneling that made the original a cult classic, the kind collectors still hunt down on the secondhand market, are back.

It's worth remembering why that jersey carries so much weight in Barça's history. The 1995-96 season ended without a trophy, but everything changed the following year. Under Sir Bobby Robson, in his final campaign in charge at Camp Nou, Barça won three titles. That was also the season a young Ronaldo Nazário arrived and scored 47 goals across all competitions, proving decisive in the club's run to the Cup Winners' Cup, the Copa del Rey and the Spanish Super Cup. With that kind of legacy attached, it's easy to see why the club wanted to bring the design back.

The video campaign accompanying the launch has its own angle too, focusing on fans who grew up dreaming of wearing the shirt and eventually did, the classic path from La Masia to the first team. Nostalgia with a purpose, you might say.

Madrid Goes Pink

Real Madrid's approach heads in a different direction, one far less rooted in the past. The new third kit comes in pale pink, featuring a raised geometric pattern the club says draws on Latin American craftsmanship and art. According to Real Madrid, the goal is to pay tribute to its global fan base and the club's ability to transcend "borders, languages and cultures."

It sounds like marketing speak, and to some extent it is, but there's an interesting detail behind it: Real Madrid hadn't worn pink in six years. The last time was back in the 2020-21 season, with that bold fuchsia away kit, which happened to coincide with a rough year for the club. Madrid finished without a trophy for the first time in more than a decade, in what turned out to be Zinedine Zidane's final season as manager.

So there you have it, two very different proposals on the table: a Barça looking back to relive one of its most beloved eras, with Ronaldo and Robson in the background, and a Madrid embracing a bold new pink with its eyes on a fan base spread across the globe. Every supporter will already have their own winner in this fashion Clásico, though that, like almost everything between these two clubs, will keep being argued over for months to come.
