Barcelona officially signs Rodri for 76.5 million euros

Some signings feel like a routine market move. Others change the entire conversation around a club. This one belongs to the second category. Barcelona made it official on Tuesday: Rodri, captain of the Spanish national team and one of the most decisive figures in world soccer over the past few years, is joining the club.

The figure had been circulating for days, and now it's confirmed: the deal is worth around 76.5 million euros (roughly $88.5 million), according to a person with knowledge of the negotiations. The announcement came at midday, after the player passed his medical and both clubs ironed out the final details of the transfer. His contract with Barça runs through 2030.

Take a moment to consider what this move means for Barcelona's midfield. Rodri, 30, joins a locker room that already includes several World Cup champions: Lamine Yamal, Dani Olmo, Pau Cubarsí, Gavi and Pedri. Adding the reigning Ballon d'Or winner, who also took home the World Cup's Golden Ball as the tournament's best player, is no small addition.

Rodri himself didn't hide how difficult it was to decide to leave Manchester City, the club where he spent seven seasons and became an undisputed starter.

Asked why he chose Barcelona over other offers, he was just as direct:

From Manchester to Can Barça

The midfielder, who had just one year left on his City contract, arrived in Barcelona on Monday and had already said that playing for the Catalan club was "a dream." He also admitted that processing his exit from England took time, saying he weighed offers from "very important clubs" before deciding, along with his family, on the path he ultimately took.

It's worth remembering where he's coming from. Rodri played 298 matches for City, scored 28 goals and won 14 titles, including the decisive goal in the 2023 Champions League final against Inter Milan. A year later came the Ballon d'Or, recognition that followed his key role in Spain's Euro triumph. Before landing in Manchester, he had come through Atlético Madrid and, before that, Villarreal.

There had also been speculation about interest from Real Madrid, a club Rodri himself had publicly praised in the past, but Spanish media agreed that approach never really got off the ground.

In Manchester, the departure was met with gratitude despite the sporting blow it represents, especially after Bernardo Silva also left the club for Real Madrid this same summer.
