Barcelona and Real Madrid Spend Nearly $400 Million for 2026-27 Season as Mourinho Makes His Return

It has been barely a month since Spain lifted the World Cup after beating Argentina in extra time, and already it is time to get back on the pitch for LaLiga. Barcelona and Real Madrid, the two clubs whose stars shaped much of that tournament, kick off a 2026-27 season this weekend defined by Mourinho's return to the Madrid bench and a transfer market in which the two giants have combined to spend nearly 400 million euros.

Madrid opens its schedule Saturday against Espanyol, while Barça, the defending champion, visits Elche on Sunday. Both sides arrive with new faces, and in Madrid's case, with the sense that the club has finally moved in the market with real conviction.

Barça's Offensive Overhaul

The signing generating the most excitement at Can Barça is Rodri, fresh off winning the World Cup Golden Ball with Spain, who arrives from Manchester City for around 60 million euros. His job is clear: give the team the kind of midfield leadership that, as Hansi Flick himself admitted, was missing last season. He is not arriving to patch a hole but to upgrade a position that was already well covered, which says a lot about the ambition behind this project.

Up front, though, there was a full shakeup. Robert Lewandowski, Ferran Torres and Marcus Rashford all left, replaced by Anthony Gordon (70 million), Karim Adeyemi (22 million) and Jesse Bisiwu (8.5 million). And there is still a chance the club could go after a true number nine. Julian Alvarez was the top target, but Atletico shut the door on negotiating with a direct LaLiga rival, so Barça will have to look elsewhere. In defense, the big update is the permanent arrival of Joao Cancelo, while Ronald Araujo and Marc-Andre ter Stegen are no longer with the club.

Mourinho, Diomande and Madrid's Big Bet

Madrid, for its part, made six signings, though the market will also be remembered for what the club could not land: Rodri slipped through its fingers. Even so, the incoming class is strong. Winger Yan Diomande arrived for a club record fee, around 125 million euros plus add-ons, and should fill the right-wing production the team has lacked. Marc Cucurella, who had a standout World Cup, joined for 60 million to shore up the left back spot, and Bernardo Silva arrived on a free transfer, though it remains to be seen whether he can fill the void Rodri left in midfield.

Rounding out the incoming class are Carlos Espi, considered Spain's best young forward last season, Ibrahima Konate (free transfer) and Denzel Dumfries, who joined from Inter Milan for 20 million. Mourinho, for his part, is still pushing behind the scenes for one more midfielder and one more defender, even if he has denied it publicly.

The Portuguese coach's return carries a heavy dose of nostalgia. Fifteen years have passed since Florentino Perez first brought him in, and even though that stint (2010-2013) ended tensely, two trophy-less seasons watching Barça win weighed more heavily than any lingering doubts. The idea is simple: a strong-willed leader who imposes an identity, even if by force.

Diego Simeone, who has now guided Atletico into the top four for 14 straight seasons and has won LaLiga twice on a budget far smaller than the two giants', summed up his club's usual caution heading into the new campaign:

Once the transfer window closes, we'll know what we have.Diego Simeone

Atletico added useful pieces in Alejandro Grimaldo, Cristian Romero and Lee Kang-In, and for now is holding on to Julian Alvarez, whose move to Barça looks increasingly unlikely. The most realistic outlook has Atletico fighting for third place, with the Champions League as a special target since the final will be played at its own stadium, the Metropolitano.

On the individual front, the comparison between Lamine Yamal and Kylian Mbappe promises to be one of the year's central storylines. Mbappe won the league's top scorer award in both of his seasons at Madrid, with 86 goals in 103 games, but neither ended in a title. Yamal, meanwhile, racked up 27 goal contributions in last season's league play (16 goals and 11 assists) and enters this season as the unquestioned leader of a locker room that, according to several analysts, carries a calmer energy than Madrid's.

So who wins the title? Opinions among analysts are split, almost down the middle. Some believe Barça remains the superior team but will be pulled in different directions by the Champions League, while others are betting that a better-built Madrid with Mourinho asserting his authority can close the eight-point gap from last season. What is clear is that, with the money spent and the pieces now on the board, El Clasico will once again be the measuring stick for a league that promises to be far more competitive than it has been over the last two seasons.
